{"id":8679,"date":"2015-02-11T14:26:02","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T14:26:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=8679"},"modified":"2015-02-24T08:03:33","modified_gmt":"2015-02-24T08:03:33","slug":"uk-remains-absent-2015-global-ultrafast-ftth-broadband-ranking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/02\/uk-remains-absent-2015-global-ultrafast-ftth-broadband-ranking.html","title":{"rendered":"UPDATE UK Still Absent from 2015 Global Ultrafast FTTH Broadband Ranking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftthcouncil.eu\/\" target=\"_new\"><span style=\"color: #227ab4;\">FTTH Council Europe<\/span><\/a>, which campaigns for the adoption of <strong>Fibre-to-the-Home<\/strong> (100Mbps+) ultrafast fibre optic broadband technology, has published its latest global ranking of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>\/P\/B progress and sadly, despite some good growth in the past year, the United Kingdom continues to be a no show.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present most of the &#8220;<em>superfast broadband<\/em>&#8221; (24Mbps+) coverage in the UK is being delivered via slower, but cheaper and quicker to deploy, hybrid-fibre technologies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s &#8216;up to&#8217; 80Mbps capable <strong>Fibre-to-the-Cabinet<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>&#8217;s 152Mbps cable (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/docsis\">DOCSIS<\/a>) network. Future upgrades like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a> and DOCSIS3.1 should also squeeze a lot more speed out of those networks.<\/p>\n<p>But others believe in an arguably much closer to future proof solution that adopts a pure fibre optic network, which can deliver reliable Gigabit level speeds (<strong>1000Mbps+<\/strong>). In most cases this approach is significantly more expensive and slower to deploy, although that hasn&#8217;t stopped a growing number of operators and countries from seeing the other benefits.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a> Council&#8217;s latest ranking, the number of <strong>Fibre-to-the-Home<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>) and similar <strong>Fibre-to-the-Building<\/strong> (FTTB) subscribers in Europe has increased by around 50% over the past 12 months and there a now <strong>14.5 million<\/strong> in total (excluding Russia and Ukraine which would add a further 14.8 million). The average FTTH\/B\/P penetration across the whole of the EU28 is now 5.6%.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately you won&#8217;t find the United Kingdom in this list because apparently we don&#8217;t yet meet the current criteria, which would require us to show 1% household penetration (note: the council appears to reference this as subscriptions and not premises passed). The ranking itself is below and a more detailed copy can be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftthconference.eu\/news-media\/news#\" target=\"_blank\">downloaded here<\/a> (sorry it&#8217;s not clearer below but the source image is quite poor).<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2015-internet-statistics\/2015_ftth_global_ranking.gif\" alt=\"2015_ftth_global_ranking\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Despite this it&#8217;s important to reflect that FTTH\/P\/B connectivity is picking up pace in the United Kingdom. Only this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/hyperopticfibre\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Hyperoptic<\/a> confirmed that they had passed 100,000 premises (the aim is 500,000 by 2018), while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> has also put over 160,000 premises within reach of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> and KC in Hull has passed 40,000. Lest we not also forget the big plans of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">CityFibre<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> or the contribution of smaller operators like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/gigaclear\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigaclear<\/a>, IFNL and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\">B4RN<\/a> etc.<\/p>\n<p>All in all the UK should currently have well over 300,000 FTTH\/P\/B premises passed and the numbers appear to be growing at an increasingly rapid pace, although the majority of related deployments remain fairly niche.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, progress is improving but the UK is unlikely to do much positive damage to the councils table unless one of the two major operators does a shock U-turn and that&#8217;s not likely to happen (both remain focused on cost effective hybrid-fibre upgrades).<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 24th Feb 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to iDATE, the UK had 43,000 FTTH\/P\/B subscribers and 380,000 homes passed at the end of 2014 (we suspect that 380k figure includes a few business premises).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The FTTH Council Europe, which campaigns for the adoption of Fibre-to-the-Home (100Mbps+) ultrafast fibre optic broadband technology, has published its latest global ranking of FTTH\/P\/B progress and sadly, despite some good growth in the past year, the United Kingdom continues to be a no show.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[52,423,65,56,34],"class_list":["post-8679","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-fibre-optic","tag-fttb","tag-ftth","tag-fttp","tag-statistics"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
