{"id":9373,"date":"2015-06-01T13:51:30","date_gmt":"2015-06-01T12:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=9373"},"modified":"2015-06-03T09:52:23","modified_gmt":"2015-06-03T08:52:23","slug":"mobile-operator-three-uk-drops-no-mid-contract-price-rise-promise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/06\/mobile-operator-three-uk-drops-no-mid-contract-price-rise-promise.html","title":{"rendered":"UPD Mobile Operator Three UK Drops No Mid-Contract Price Rise Promise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year saw mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> make a clear commitment concerning mid-contract prices rises by telling customers that the &#8220;<em>fixed monthly recurring fee from Three will not go up in the minimum term of your contract<\/em>,&#8221; but they now appear to have done a U-turn.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The commitment was originally made in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s new &#8220;<em>guidance<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/01\/ofcom-uk-measures-stop-mid-contract-price-hikes-start-tomorrow.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), which was intended to prevent broadband, phone and mobile providers from increasing their prices while customers were still within the original contract period (often 12, 18 or 24 month terms).<\/p>\n<p>At the time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> did include one caveat to this, which is that providers would still be able to impose increases based on\u00a0natural movements in the <strong>Retail Price Index<\/strong> (inflation). Never the less some operators, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>, took a very pro-consumer stance even towards RPI linked adjustments.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> Spokesperson said (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.three.co.uk\/2014\/01\/24\/great-news-for-consumers-our-position-on-ofcoms-announcement-about-mid-contract-price-rises\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jan 2014<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Your fixed monthly recurring fee from Three will not go up in the minimum term of your contract. We support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>\u2019s approach to fixing the price for pay monthly contracts for their duration. We think it\u2019s only fair that customers should have clarity around costs when they sign up to a contract<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However\u00a0consumers who take out contracts with Three UK are now being informed that &#8220;<em>Each May, your monthly package price will increase by an amount up to the RPI rate, published in the February that year<\/em>.&#8221; Quite a bit different from the original &#8220;<em>will not go up<\/em>&#8221; pledge of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Three UK clarified to one of our readers, Jooles: &#8220;<em>If you take out a new contract or upgrade on or after 29 May 2015, you\u2019ll see the monthly cost of your contract increase annually in line with the RPI. If you&#8217;re taking out a new contract or upgrading, these new Ts&amp;Cs will be made clear to you when you enter into your new contract. While the new Ts&amp;Cs are being introduced this year, the first RPI increase will be in May 2016 and you\u2019ll see it from your May bill onwards<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As it stands the position of Three UK is broadly in line with that of other operators, although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> may still be sticking to their promise.. for now. Suffice to say that price commitments from commercial businesses should always be taken with a pinch of salt because economic reality almost always catches up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 3rd June 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve been told by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tescomobile\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Tesco Mobile<\/a>\u00a0that they also continue to make a similar prime promise to the one that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> do (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tescomobile.com\/tariff-promise\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year saw mobile operator Three UK make a clear commitment concerning mid-contract prices rises by telling customers that the &#8220;fixed monthly recurring fee from Three will not go up in the minimum term of your contract,&#8221; but they now appear to have done a U-turn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[60,36,63],"class_list":["post-9373","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-mobile-broadband","tag-ofcom-regulation","tag-three-uk"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
