But the gap between rural and urban areas is still significant.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In addition, the average upload speed increased to 3.7Mbps (Megabits per second), which is up from 2.9Mbps at the last report in 2015 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/02\/ofcom-average-uk-home-broadband-speeds-slowly-reach-23mbps.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). The data itself was gathered during November 2015 via specially modified routers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/samknows\" target=\"_blank\">SamKnows<\/a>, which were installed in around 2,000 homes across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly the limited sample size remains a hindrance and this also means that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s results are only useful for reflecting the performance of those who subscribe to the markets largest ISPs, primarily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">PlusNet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Average UK Download Speeds (% Improvement vs Prior Report)<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n* March 2016 = 28.9Mbps<br \/>\n* February 2015 = 22.8Mbps (+21.93%)<br \/>\n* October 2014 = 18.7Mbps (+5.06%)<br \/>\n* April 2014 = 17.8Mbps (+21.09%)<br \/>\n* August 2013 = 14.7Mbps (+22.50%)<br \/>\n* March 2013 = 12Mbps (+34%)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s new report has made some panel changes, which are designed to deliver an improved\u00a0representation of all the major broadband packages and to allow for a better analysis of consumer experiences in urban and rural areas. Part of this has involved a rebalancing of the sample data so as to be &#8220;<em>less dominated by high-speed packages<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that it&#8217;s worth remembering that the Government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> programme, which is predominantly working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> to roll-out superfast broadband (<strong>24Mbps+<\/strong>) connectivity (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>\/P) to 95% of the UK by 2017\/18,\u00a0has made\u00a0good progress over the past year. Sadly many rural areas have yet to benefit and so the gap remains very noticeable and future urban upgrades may only widen it.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2016-internet-statistics\/ofcom_average_uk_rural_vs_urban_broadband_download_speeds_h1_2016.gif\" alt=\"ofcom_average_uk_rural_vs_urban_broadband_download_speeds_h1_2016\" \/><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2016-internet-statistics\/ofcom_average_uk_rural_vs_urban_broadband_upload_speeds_h1_2016.gif\" alt=\"ofcom_average_uk_rural_vs_urban_broadband_upload_speeds_h1_2016\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Clearly\u00a0urban areas continue to exert the most influence on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s report, which is\u00a0also being boosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>&#8217;s cable network expansion (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/02\/virgin-media-expand-uk-cable-broadband-network-17-million-premises-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) and their latest 200Mbps speed upgrade (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/09\/virgin-media-boosts-top-uk-vivid-cable-broadband-speeds-to-200mbps.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s 500Mbps capable\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gfast\">G.fast<\/a><\/strong> upgrade may also add to this urban boost in the future (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/01\/bt-confirm-uk-rollout-1000mbps-g-fast-ultrafast-broadband-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/09\/bt-sets-plan-for-universal-5-10mbps-uk-broadband-and-500mbps-g-fast-rollout.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), but we don&#8217;t expect that to begin a commercial roll-out until next summer.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise it&#8217;s important to remember that the availability of a &#8220;<em>superfast<\/em>&#8221; connection method doesn\u2019t strictly mirror take-up and a lot of people are happy to stay on slower copper ADSL2+ (up to 20Mbps) lines for the time being, not least due to the lower cost and or a lack of awareness about the availability of upgrades. All of this impacts the results.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise\u00a0it&#8217;s no surprise to find that the performance split by connection technology hasn&#8217;t changed much since the last report, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>&#8217;s cable network continuing to do well.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2016-internet-statistics\/ofcom_average_uk_broadband_speed_by_technology_h1_2016.gif\" alt=\"ofcom_average_uk_broadband_speed_by_technology_h1_2016\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Otherwise most of the reported performance improvement in this\u00a0report continue to\u00a0stem from\u00a0already well upgraded urban areas and their expanding adoption of superfast connectivity, particularly on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" target=\"_new\">Virgin Media<\/a>\u2019s cable network.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2016-internet-statistics\/ofcom_average_uk_broadband_speeds_by_isp.gif\" alt=\"ofcom_average_uk_broadband_speeds_by_isp\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Resolving Speed Complaints<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At this point we usually find it helpful to point our readers towards Ofcom&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/06\/ofcom-decides-slow-broadband-speeds-mean-you-can-exit-contract-anytime.html\" target=\"_blank\">Voluntary Broadband Speeds Code of Practice<\/a> (a separate version exists for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/01\/ofcom-uk-introduces-new-business-broadband-speed-code-of-practice.html\" target=\"_blank\">business users<\/a>), which broadly requires member ISPs to provide reliable estimates of connection performance and to also help resolve related problems when they arise.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore the code requires ISPs to give new customers a <strong>Minimum Guaranteed Access Line Speed<\/strong> (MGALS), which reflects the access line speeds achieved by the slowest 10% of the provider&#8217;s broadband subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>Crucially if the ISP cannot resolve your problem and the performance has fallen below the provider&#8217;s MGALS level then the code allows you to leave your contract penalty free and switch to another provider, although this won&#8217;t necessarily resolve the underlying problem (especially if it&#8217;s related to BTOpenreach&#8217;s infrastructure).<\/p>\n<p>Ordinarily we&#8217;d do a much more extensive summary, but right now I&#8217;m taking an Easter break. <a href=\"http:\/\/stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk\/market-data-research\/other\/telecoms-research\/broadband-speeds\/UK-home-broadband-performance-Nov-15\/?utm_source=updates&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=UK-Home-Broadband-Performance-report&amp;utm_term=fixed%2C%20broadband%2C%20uk%2C%20home\" target=\"_blank\">Check out the full report here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The telecoms regulator has today published their re-jigged annual 2016 report into the Internet performance of the United Kingdom&#8217;s largest fixed line home broadband ISPs and their customers, which reveals that the average home download speed has jumped from 22.8Mbps last year to 28.9Mbps now.
