DeeLondon's Review for SSE

 SSE (Broadband Fixed Line)

Title: SSE is Heavily Traffic Shaped
We just got SSE Fibre 78mb/s Broadband installed and what you have to understand is that they will traffic shape your connection to such an extent that it becomes slower then ADSL from non traffic shaped providers such as Sky.

When you do a call to a speed testing website you are presented with amazingly fast download and upload speeds

However doing things like system updates, general file downloading, etc and you find the speeds drop way lower, I can honestly say downloading a regular 1GB File from a well known site such as FileHippo on 18mb/s ADSL on Sky was faster then 78mb/s Fibre with SSE .. why because SSE use heavy traffic shaping even at a non peak time like 3pm.

You have been warned - SSE Will take a great connection and slow it right down. The first time you do something it seems so fast, but next time it's slower and then 3rd time slower again. Even playing 1080P videos on YouTube were constantly stopping to buffer on a desktop PC connected to the router via Ethernet cable. The WiFi router they supply also doesn't seem to do a good job of being able to keep up with the maximum 78mb/s speed - so in the rare times you are lucky enough to get the full download speed, if you're connecting over WiFi your speed is approx half this. And in this case we were less then 3 metres from the router through a single brick wall.

Do not trust reviews based solely on users who went to a speed testing website and ran a speed test once - the ISP's can give priority to speed testing websites so you think you've got a great connection.

Once you do real world downloading you'll get nowhere near these top speeds.
