UK ISP Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has, for the past six months, been hinting in its quarterly financial results about plans to migrate its shared unbundled/BT platform onto a more cost effective fully unbundled service. This would give Sky full control over its telephone line and broadband services.

British broadcaster and ISP BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) has struck a new content deal with Microsoft that will see live football, TV and film content delivered to owners of the software giant’s popular XBox 360 games console. Details about what content will be shared and how much it will cost have not been revealed, although an autumn launch is on the cards.

The latest research from analyst firm Berg Insight has revealed that HSPA Mobile Broadband technology (up to 14.4Mbps) accounted for 11.6% of total broadband connections in Europe at the end of 2008. The number of related Mobile Broadband subscribers (connected PCs) grew by 74% year-on-year in 2008 to reach 14.6 million and is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30% to 70 million in 2014.

The Strategic Advisory Board for Intellectual Property Policy (SABIP), a government advisor, has published the results of two recently commissioned literature reviews into intellectual property and the behaviours of Digital Consumers in the online world. The studies reveal that approximately 7 million people in the UK are involved with illegal downloads, accounting for over half of the country's total Internet traffic.

Time Warner has confirmed plans to proceed with the complete legal and structural separation of AOL (aka - America Online). Following the proposed transaction, AOL would be an independent, publicly traded company. Presently AOL UK's Internet access customers are already owned by The Carphone Warehouse ( TalkTalk ), though until now its content has remained under the control of Time Warner.

Comparison site BroadbandGenie has conducted an interesting test of Mobile Broadband operators by taking their services on a two day, 350 mile, train trip from Cambridge to London, then London to Bournemouth, and back again. Virgin Media came top overall, followed closely by Vodafone . The following USB Modems (Dongles) were used in the tests: Huawei E160 x3 ( O2 , Orange , Vodafone ), Huawei E169G ( Three (3) ), Huawei E170 ( T-Mobile ), Huawei E172 ( Vodafone ).

ISP Tiscali UK has announced a new content partnership with Yell.com, the online business directory from Yellow Pages. The deal will see Yell.com take the position of integrated local business listings search provider on Tiscali's portal.

Business ISP Easynet Connect, which recently launched a range of new no minimum term (i.e. penalty free 30-day notice period) broadband packages (news), has extended the availability of this offer following a high level of customer interest. The promotion had previously been due to end last month.

Popular UK ISP IDNet has today become the latest provider to launch a new range of up to 24Mbps (ADSL2+) broadband packages (1.4Mbps upload) with bigger usage allowances. Prices start from just £14.67 per month (12GB usage allowance) and can also be bundled with voice line rental from an extra £10 per month.

Small UK ISP Hi-Velocity, which late last year vanished from the ISPA’s membership list and got itself into hot water over broadband migrations (news), has now had its broadband supply terminated by murphx. We have been unable to reach the ISP for comment and, at the time of writing, their website is not loading either.

BT Business has teamed up with Shareband to launch a new bonded-ADSL broadband service in Lincolnshire, which allows up to four separate broadband lines to be merged (linked) into a single fast connection. Bonding technology is nothing new, although customers do have to pay for each additional telephone line, which makes the service more the preserve of business users that can afford it.

The BBC News Online has revealed the results of new research into UK broadband notspots, which are locations where high-speed Internet access is either not available or runs very slowly (less than 2Mbps). The Samknows study found that roughly 3m UK homes fall into this bracket, which could make the government’s plans to deliver a minimum broadband speed of 2Mbps to the whole country by 2012 very difficult (related news).

Some of BT's Business Broadband customers, specifically those with Static IP addresses, were left experiencing difficulty accessing the Internet this morning due to an unspecified problem. The issue began occurring during the very early hours but was fixed by 11:25AM. BT has apologised for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their patience.

The latest research from Telecompaper has revealed that the Mobile Broadband modem market, which includes USB Modem (Dongle) devices, PC Cards, ExpressCards and internal cellular modems for laptops and netbooks, reached around 10.5m units in Western Europe in 2008, which compares with 4.3m in 2007. The market remains dominated by two Chinese manufacturers, Huawei and ZTE.

UK satellite operator Avanti Communications, which has yet to even launch its new HYLAS broadband satellite (related news - HERE and HERE), has been awarded a project by the European Space Agency (ESA) contributing €250,000 in 2009 to the cost of work on a Preliminary Design Review for a new satellite system called Hercules.

Details of BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) and Universal Music's long running plans to launch a legal broadband music download service (original news), which will now be called Sky Songs, have finally been unearthed. The preliminary details hint at a four tier service, with each offering unlimited "streaming" (listen for free online).
