Mozilla has just released the latest version of its highly popular free website browsing software - Firefox 3.5. This release boasts the usual bug / security fixes and is also known to be considerably faster than the previous FF3 when it comes to JavaScript rendering; not to mention HTML5 support, location-aware browsing, downloadable fonts and private browsing.

The European Union's (EU) antitrust authorities have today given final approval for TalkTalk ( The Carphone Warehouse , AOL UK , Opal etc. ) to complete its £236 million acquisition of rival broadband ISP Tiscali UK.

Ofcom has today confirmed plans to clear the 800MHz band (790-862MHz) of radio spectrum, which is currently being used for the old analogue television (TV) services. The move opens the way for next generation Mobile Broadband services to utilise the frequency, thus delivering faster and cheaper wireless Internet access over an even wider coverage.

Ofcom's mandatory broadband migration rules (General Condition 22) have done a lot to improve the UK ISP market, yet very little has been done in the years since its inception to make it easier for consumers with bundled services (broadband, line rental and voice packages etc.) to switch providers. Today the Communications Consumer Panel (CCP) is calling for that to change.

The latest print edition of Which?, a prominent consumer group, has raised fresh concerns about the fallibility of evidence against "suspected" illegal file sharers that is being provided to UK broadband ISPs via organisations like ACS:Law solicitors. So much doubt has been cast that even the UK's Internet Service Providers Association ( ISPA ) has now raised its concerns.

Mobile operator Three (3) UK has introduced what appears to be one of the country's lowest priced standard 'per MB' (MegaByte) Mobile Broadband EU data roaming rates - £1.25 per every 1MB. By comparison the EU proposed a wholesale cap of 1Euro (£0.84) per 1MB (related news). Three (3) has also provided a useful price comparison graphic for the UK's five main operators.

The UK Parliament's cross-party Business and Enterprise Committee has agreed to carry out an inquiry examining broadband speeds in the UK. The move follows Lord Carter's recent Digital Britain report, which pledged to provide a 2Mbps universal minimum UK broadband speed by 2012 (USC) and put forward a broadband tax on fixed phone lines to help fund the rollout of next generation technologies.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has enhanced its existing Mobile Broadband packages to include a new 6 month contract option that costs from £15 per month and includes 3GB (GigaBytes) of monthly data usage allowance; extra usage costs £15 per 1GB.

Mobile operator O2 has announced a new partnership with Wi-Fi (wireless broadband) provider BT Openzone, which will see O2's Mobile Broadband customers being given access to 3,000 additional BT Wi-Fi Hotspots. The changes will require existing customers to upgrade their Connection Manager Software, which is currently only available for Microsoft Windows users.

Last month we reported that the German owners of Mobile Broadband operator T-Mobile UK, Deutsche Telekom, had come under pressing from two main shareholders to sell the operator (here). Today reports are starting to come in that the world's largest mobile phone firm by revenue - Vodafone , is considering a bid.

The chief executive of UK telecoms regulator Ofcom , Ed Richards , has said that warning letters, which are typically sent by broadband ISPs to consumers suspected of involvement with online piracy (illegal downloads / file sharing), DO have a positive effect.

UK ISP Entanet , a wholesale voice and broadband data communications provider , has entered into the bitter row over who should pay for online content distribution - the ISP or the content developer (e.g. the BBC). Entanet claims that a fundamental issue is being missed and instead points an accusing finger at BT Wholesale for its high bandwidth prices.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has made a cock-up of its attempt to correct a billing error, which saw customers being charged £5 when they signed-up for the providers free Mobile Internet Access promotion. Recognising the fault it promptly shot off an email to the 416 affected customers, only to do so by using the CC instead of BCC method - exposing all the private email addresses.

Broadband ISP Tiscali UK, which is now owned by TalkTalk ( The Carphone Warehouse ), has once again re-iterated old calls for broadcasters (BBC, ITV etc.) to pay ISPs for the delivery of their online TV content. The news follows similar calls made by BT earlier this month (here) and echo's what Tiscali said early last year (here).
