Thanks to one of our readers for informing us that Entanet also has charts that show the distribution of the broadband speeds received by customers on the provider’s network (e.g. ADSL24 , Aquiss etc.). This follows yesterdays news where PlusNet posted nearly identical data for its ISP (here).

UK ISP Be Broadband ( O2 ) has partnered with Cerberus Networks to provide a reseller programme for business providers. The partnership gives access to Be's 'up to' 24Mbps unbundled ( LLU ) ADSL2+ broadband network. With over 1200 exchanges enabled, the partnership reaches 80% of the UK population.

ISP Orange UK (France Telecom) has issued its latest half-year results to the end of June 2009, which shows that the provider is still shedding broadband subscribers and has dropped from a total of 1m in Q4-2008 to 954,000 in Q2-2009.

UK ISP O2 ( Be Broadband ) has released its latest results to the end of June 2009 (Q2), highlighting a continued slowing of its broadband subscriber uptake by going from 404,484 in Q1 to 456,882 now. The growth of +52,398 new broadband users represents a rough 10k per quarter slowing compared with Q1-2009's +63,618 and Q4-2008's +73,776.

Broadband ISP Tiscali UK has been accused of being lax with the security of its user’s private personal details after it allowed a customer’s phone number and address to be published in public directories, despite repeated requests for it to be removed.

Microsoft (MSN) has launched an advertising-funded broadband video and TV player website, which is not unlike the BBC's iPlayer, Hulu or even YouTube. The service is due to be officially introduced next week and will include 300+ hours of TV shows and be operated under trial (beta) status.

Serious damage has been caused to the 9,300mile long undersea SAT-3 cable, which has resulted in major disruption to West African Internet access and services. Several countries, including Benin, Togo, Niger and Nigeria, have all been hit hard. The cable itself runs between Europe (Portugal and Spain) to South Africa, via West Africa.

BT Group has released its latest second quarter results to 30th June 2009, which reveals that the operator was holding steady with a total of 4.8m retail broadband ( BT , PlusNet etc. ) customers, the same as they had in Q1.

The latest Q2-2009 McAfee Threat Report reveals that junk email (SPAM) now accounts for a staggering 92% of all email messages. There had been a drop reported during the previous two quarters when several major SPAMMERS were shut down, although as expected this decline didn’t last.

BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) has released its latest set of quarterly results to 30th June 2009. The groups broadband service saw another decline in quarterly uptake by adding +118,000 new customers to its service, which compares with +130,000 in Q1-2009 and +163,000 for Q4-2008.

BT Openzone UK, a broadband wireless ( Wi-Fi ) Hotspot provider, has extended its current partnership with Quiconnect for another three years. Quiconnect will continue to link BT with targeted wireless broadband networks across the globe. This boosts the number of international public hotspots BT users can access and allows other operators to access their Wi-Fi network.

Juniper Research has predicted that WiMAX (802.16e) broadband wireless subscribers will approach 50 million globally by 2014, albeit with most of the limited growth occurring in the Far East and China due to the region’s status as an early adopter.

UK ISP PlusNet has posted some interesting data that shows the distribution of the broadband speeds received by customers on the provider’s network. It reveals that, on BT's older/existing 20CN (up to 8Mbps) platform, the average performance is around 4520Kbps (4.5Mbps). Some 15% of the ISPs end-users also use the old 512Kbps (500), 1Mbps (1000) or 2Mbps (2000) fixed-rate packages.

Mobile operator O2 UK has extended its existing half-price (£14.67) Mobile Broadband USB Modem promotion to Monday 3rd August; it had originally been due to end today. Customers signing up to one of O2's Pay As You Go (PAYG) Mobile Broadband packages (listed below) will be able to get a USB Modem for half the usual price.

A new survey has revealed that nearly three in four (78%) UK Mobile Broadband users’ risk incurring significant extra costs by unknowingly downloading more than their allocated data usage allowance. Some operators , such as O2 , charge up to £200 per GB (GigaByte) for exceeding the limit and Three (3) charges £100 per GB. Both send a text to the user when at the limit, and Three (3) disconnect the service when additional charges reach £50.

ItsHidden is currently offering FREE access to its remote Virtual Private Network (VPN) during beta testing, which is something that would normally cost money. VPN's essentially allow users to setup a private/encrypted network between users over the Internet, which can be good for remote office/work connections and anonymous website browsing etc. Don't be surprised if it gets hammered by thousands of users to the point of being useless though.

The European Commission's (EC) Council of Ministers has followed the European Parliament in approving an EC proposal that changes the original GSM Directive of 1987 to allow modern 3G Mobile Broadband and future 4G services to use the 900MHz frequency band (refarming). Presently mobile operators can only use 900MHz for 2G voice and slower GPRS/GSM data transfers (about the speed of an old dialup modem).

The new awards are actually a revamped version of the providers previous Innovation in the Community Awards, albeit with a few changes.

The governments Office of Fair Trading (OFT) managed consumer advice service, Consumer Direct, took more than 414,000 consumer complaints in the six month period to the end of June 2009, down 3% on the same period last year. The results showed a notable decline in complaints about UK broadband ISPs.

Ofcom has today published the results of its latest research into fixed-line broadband speeds in the UK. The study, which was conducted with technical partner Samknows and market research agency GfK, reveals that the average broadband speed in April was 4.1Mbps, which is up from 3.6Mbps reported during January this year (original news).
