Avonline has cut the hardware, activation and installation fee of its 'up to' 3.6Mbps (384Kbps upload) Eutelsat based Tooway satellite broadband service by £100, which brings the new starting cost to £599. Service rental prices remain the same and start at £29.99 per month, including a 2.4GB (GigaByte) monthly data usage allowance.

Mobile operator Three (3) UK has revealed the final pricing and launch date for its new Mobile Wi-Fi device - MiFi. It is essentially a battery powered wireless router that has been designed to distribute the operators Mobile Broadband ( 3G ) service over a Wi-Fi link and was first revealed at the beginning of August (here).

Peter Mandelson, the Secretary of State for Business, and the Digital Britain Forum have both responded to concerns over the governments tougher stance against illegal UK broadband file sharing. The move follows Mandelsons attempt to get the highly controversial 'cut-off illegal downloaders from their ISP' measure added back into the Digital Britain report, which had previously ruled it out.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK appears to be seeing a change of fortunes on its recently refreshed Virgin.net (Virgin National) ADSL2 ('up to' 20Mbps) broadband service, which is available to consumers who reside outside of the operators cable coverage. Demand for the updated products has apparently been so high that some subscribers are facing longer than expected delays with service activation.

The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) has issued its 2009 'Internet Access Households and Individuals' (.PDF format) report, which reveals that 18.31m UK households now have Internet access (70% of all households - an increase of 1.85m households since 2008).

Regulator Ofcom has just uploaded a new video guide on how to make a complaint if you have a problem with your UK telecoms or broadband ISP. The guide itself only focuses on the basics and the regulators Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) schemes, although it is still a very useful video.

Rights collector PRS for Music has released the results of a new study into illegal file sharing, which reveals that the UK TV industry is facing dramatic digital disruption and huge piracy problems. The study, which was presented at the Edinburgh Television Festival, claims that piracy has caused music sales to drop to 1994 levels and is spreading rampantly to TV and Film.

Mobile operator T-Mobile UK has once again won high praise for its Mobile Broadband service via an independent July 2009 YouGov survey of 2,068 respondents. The results ranked the operator first in 8 out of 15 customer satisfaction metrics, which is similar to its previous top placements in identical Q1 and Q2 2009 surveys (here and here).

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has upgraded its 'up to' 7.2Mbps Mobile Broadband ( 3G ) network to the fastest download speed that first generation HSPA technology can support - 'up to' 14.4Mbps. However this is only a theoretical top rate and the maximum practical speed is more like 10.8Mbps, but you probably won’t get anywhere near that either.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has apologised after customers around the country were hit by a "loss of their Email service" that began on Monday of this week and has only just been resolved today. The operator has not revealed what caused the prolonged problems and recently posted a very sparse service status update.

The Speed Matters project, a survey of USA broadband speeds by the Communications Workers of America (CWA), has released its third annual report. The study found that average real-world download speeds in the USA stood at 5.1Mbps, ranking the country 28th in the world, which of course means that the UK's lowly 4.1Mbps (original news) is even further behind.

Both UK ISPs Virgin Media and Sky Broadband have managed to escape seeing several complaints against national press adverts for their respective broadband services being upheld by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). Both providers received angry moans from rival ISPs but none were found to be in breach of the ASA's code.

Both Consumer Focus and the UK Internet Service Providers Association ( ISPA ) have reacted with concern to today's news that the government could force broadband ISPs to cut-off those "suspected" of involvement with illegal file sharing piracy (original news).

Despite being over a month since UK ISP Breathe Networks was acquired in a management buy-out under the "new" name of Breathe Internet (original news), customers of its most traumatised sibling ISP - ZetNet - are continuing to suffer problems with their email and other areas of service. The situation has led many to leave the provider; Breathe is also suffering related problems.

The UK government has officially proposed an amendment to Lord Carter's final Digital Britain report, which would include a new policy that would give Ofcom greater powers to tackle illegal online file sharers sooner. This will now also include the controversial measure of suspending "hard core copyright pirates" from their broadband ISP.

Popular broadband ISP Zen Internet has come top in the Which? magazines "Best Buy" survey with a customer satisfaction score of 87%. Zen was followed by O2 in second place, receiving a respectable 85% satisfaction. The Utility Warehouse came 3rd with 81% and Be Broadband, which is owned and shares the same network as O2, was treated separately to come in 4th place on 80%.

The UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has opened a market study into advertising and pricing, which will also cover behavioural advertising. The news caused shares in Phorm to dive and at one point hit just 100p, recovering back to 126p now. Phorm is the controversial system that raised privacy concerns because of how it works with UK broadband ISPs to monitor what websites you visit for use in targeted advertising campaigns.
