The European Commission (EC) has set the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons after it issued a warning to Spain over the country’s plans to tackle illegal P2P file sharing. The EC said any policy that would force or allow broadband ISPs to disconnecting customers "suspected" of illegal downloading would first require a court order or risk conflict with the EU.

Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom, which recently signed an agreement to combine their UK operations ( T-Mobile and Orange ) into a 50:50 joint venture company, are refusing to hand over any of their radio spectrum (170MHz total) for use by rival Mobile Broadband operators and services.

The Swedish International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has heralded Sweden's crackdown against illegal P2P file sharing, which included forcing broadband ISP to block torrent link websites (e.g. The Pirate Bay), for helping to turn music sales around following seven years of decline. Revenues rose by 18% in the first nine months of this year, coinciding with much of the crackdown.

Residents of Alston Moor, a remote rural UK village in Cumbria, have begun using an up to 20Mbps fibre optic broadband cable link that they dug into the ground themselves. Locals who helped build the cable and microwave link to the Tees Valley now hope to push speeds even further, up to 100Mbps.

The East of England Director for BT , Peter McCarthy-Ward , has warned that the government’s commitment to deliver a minimum broadband speed of 2Mbps to virtually every household in the UK by 2012 (USC - Universal Service Commitment) could be missed in Norfolk. McCarthy-Ward was speaking at a Friday night conference on Shaping Norfolk's Future (SNF).
