UK ISP XILO is has announced that, until the end of the year, all of its BT-based fixed rate Home and Office up to 8Mbps broadband packages, as well as their Pro 16 (up to 16Mbps) broadband products have free activation and migration. The UK Internet Service Providers Association ( ISPA ) and broadband ISP TalkTalk ( The Carphone Warehouse , Tiscali , AOL etc. ) have both come out in strong opposition to some of yesterdays Digital Economy Bill measures (original news), which have been designed to tackle illegal downloading.

UK ISP TalkTalk has replaced its free connection offer (now back to the old price of £29.99) with a promotion that gives new broadband subscribers a £30 voucher to spend at Marks and Spencer (M&S). The offer is only available until 3rd December 2009. We preferred the free connection but no doubt that will be back again soon.

New reports claim that the UK Secretary of State, Peter Mandelson, is planning to make a shocking addition to the Digital Economy Bill. The new power would grant him the ability to set "secondary legislation" (i.e. legislation passed without debate) to amend the provisions of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (1988).

The latest research from consumer magazine Which? has compared what UK consumers pay for certain products and services with similar ones in France, Germany, Italy and Spain. It reveals that the country might not be 'rip-off Britain' after all, with UK broadband services in particular doing quite well.

Tesco looks set to revamp its range of broadband ISP services after signing a new five-year deal for wholesale broadband lines with Cable & Wireless (C&W). The agreement will see Tesco launch a new range of bundled home phone and broadband packages, although no further details have been revealed.

Ofcom has held talks with Detica, a BAE subsidiary that specialises in data gathering and processing, about the possible use of its Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) called CView. The technology could be used to help monitor file sharing (P2P) traffic on broadband ISP networks and measure the level of illegal downloading among users.
