Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK has launched a new super cheap Mobile Broadband package for just £5 a month on a short 30 day minimum contract. The package itself only has a modest monthly data usage allowance quota of 500MB (0.5GB) and the USB Modem (Dongle) costs £19.99, although you do get unlimited Wi-Fi at thousands of Hotspots provided by The Cloud and BT Openzone.

The latest independent survey of 1,000 workers from business ISP Star UK has found that 72% of British workers spend their lunch hour online and performing activities like shopping, banking, catching up with the latest sport or chatting to their friends on email or Facebook.

The community based Mawr Development Trust (MDT), which represents the rural villages of Craigcefn Parc, Felindre and Garnswllt north of Swansea in Wales (UK), could become one of the first beneficiaries of the Welsh Assembly’s new 'Broadband Support Initiative'. The news follows a successful 15Mbps speed wireless internet access trial by TFL Group, which was delivered into Felindre's village hall.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk UK has issued another statement in defence of its controversial new security system, which aims to block sites that contain malicious software by "anonymously" recording the URL addresses visited by its customers and comparing them against a list of good and bad websites. Sites that are not on one of its lists will also be "scanned for threats".

European satellite operator Eutelsat has released its latest full year results and revealed that its new KA-SAT Satellite, which will offer download speeds of up to 10Mbps and should become part of their Tooway consumer broadband service in the EU and UK, is officially set to be launched in November this year.

Internet and phone provider TalkTalk UK ( AOL UK , Tiscali , Opal ) has revealed its latest first quarter (Q1-2010) results, which saw its broadband ISP subscriber base grow from 4,197,000 in Q4-2009 to 4,231,000 in Q1-2010 (+34,000); a slowdown on Q4-2009's net adds of +42k.

BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) has released its latest set of quarterly results to 30th June 2010 and revealed that they are now home to 2,624,000 broadband ISP subscribers. That's an increase of +119,000 for Q2, which compares well with Q1's +101,000.

The UK governments Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, Ed Vaizey MP, yesterday confirmed plans that will see Ofcom auction off crucial 2.6GHz and 800MHz spectrum and liberalise 2G bands at 900MHz and 1800MHz "by the end of 2011".

The Interception of Communications Commissioner (ICC), Sir Paul Kennedy, has disclosed in his latest annual report that public authorities made 525,130 communications data requests to broadband ISPs in the UK for people's phone and email records. A rise on 2008's figure of 504,073.

Ookla, which is responsible for running the immensely popular Speedtest.net website, has now added broadband UK ISP rankings to its popular index of worldwide internet performance - Net Index. Telewest Broadband came top of the download speed list with an average of 15.15Mbps, while Virgin Media held 2nd place on 13.39Mbps; it should be noted that Telewest is a part of Virgin.

Communications provider BT Retail UK has released its latest financial results to 30th June 2010, revealing that its broadband ISP subscriber base had increased by +96,000 from 5,131,000 in Q1-2010 to 5,227,000 in Q2. This is a slowdown on Q1 when +123,000 were added.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has reported its latest second quarter 2010 results, revealing that its broadband ISP subscriber base has grown from 4,179,700 in Q1 to 4,207,800 in Q2 of this year. The figure suggest that VM has had a poor quarter with consumer additions of only +28,100; significantly down on Q1's +76,200.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld an interesting complaint against Virgin Media by one of its customers, whom accused the quad-play broadband ISP, TV, mobile and phone provider of sending him unwanted marketing communications by e-mail (SPAM).

Akamai, which delivers 20% of global online traffic, has released its latest State of the Internet Q1-2010 report and revealed that the average UK (ranked 27th out of 201 countries) broadband internet connection speed during Q1 was 3.8Mbps (yesterdays May 2010 data from Ofcom recorded 5.2Mbps), while the fastest average maximum UK speed stood at 12.3Mbps.

Yesterday's move by the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, to toughen its Voluntary Code of Practice on Broadband Speeds ("the Code") has been greeted with a mixed response by the country's Internet Service Providers (ISP). Most providers have welcomed the changes but a few clearly have gripes.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has announced that it is teaming up with Surf Telecoms, a Western Power Distribution company, to trial the use of electricity poles in delivering superfast fibre optic broadband internet access and TV services to homes in the Welsh village of Crumlin (Caerphilly).

The results from Ofcoms latest research into UK fixed-line broadband ISP speeds has today been published. The study, conducted in partnership with Samknows (a broadband monitoring specialist), reveals that the average internet download speed in May 2010 was 5.2Mbps (Megabits per second), which is up from 4.1Mb in April 2009. In response the regulator has also moved to toughen its Voluntary Code of Practice on Broadband Speeds ("the Code").

The recently re-launched ISP Demon Internet (THUS Group, Cable & Wireless) has been forced to impose a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) on its new "unlimited" business broadband packages. The provider claims that it has recently seen a big increase in the amount of heavy users, which are forcing it to make "tough decisions to protect our network and quality of service".
