The European Commission (EC) is taking the UK to the EU Court of Justice for failing to fully implement its internet and email privacy rules (ePrivacy Directive 2002/58/EC and Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC). The original case was brought after BT angered many by running two secret trials of Phorm technology, which many likened to Spyware, on customers, and without their consent, during 2006 and 2007.

Some 80-90% of local premises across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (UK) can now expected "super-fast" fibre broadband (FTTC / FTTP) speeds of up to 100Mb by 2014, thanks to a new £132 million part-European funded BT project.

UK ISP Virgin Media has revealed that it's upgrading the upload speeds on all of its broadband ISP packages for FREE and introducing "smart" Traffic Management restrictions during peak times.

PC Pro magazine's annual Reliability & Service Awards took place last night in London, which saw UK broadband ISP Zen Internet walking away with yet another "Best ISP" gong for 2010. Zen has now been named Best ISP for the past six years.

BT Openreach, which is responsible for ensuring that all rival ISPs have equality of access to BT's local network, has revealed the next 159 UK telephone exchanges (Phase 6) to be upgraded for its new 'up to' 40Mbps and 100Mbps fibre optic based FTTC / FTTP broadband services. The new list covers upgrades that are expected to take place between September and December 2011.

The most recent European Email Deliverability Benchmark Report (2H 2010) from Return Path has revealed that 17.8% of supposedly "legitimate marketing emails" sent to European consumers are not being delivered (up from 11.1% six months ago), with most going missing or finding their way into SPAM (junk folders).

Several UK ISPs and Mobile Broadband providers won heavy praise at least nights 2010 Top10.com Broadband Awards. In particular TalkTalk was named 'Best Broadband & Home Phone' provider and also managed to scoop 'Best Home Broadband Package' for its Essentials product.

The business division of Virgin Media UK (aka - Virgin Media Business) has announced its intention to shake-up the broadband ISP market with a new 'Big Red Internet' service, which will offer download speeds of 'up to' either 100Mb (Megabits per second) or 1Gbps (Gigabits per second)!

Ofcom, which recently completed its UK Net Neutrality (the principal of treating all internet traffic as equal) consultation (here), is expected to tell broadband ISPs that they are free to trample all over the principal, just so long as customers are told about it in a "transparent" way. To most ISPs, transparent = small print, which of course nobody ever reads.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a swathe of 42 customer complaints against various online sales promotions for Sky Broadband and its TV service bundles, which offered £50 worth of Marks and Spencer’s vouchers that some people never received.

Several broadband ISPs, including Sky Broadband , TalkTalk and Timico UK, have now given their reactions to the recent ACS:Law (Andrew Crossley) email leak. The notorious solicitors firm found its dirty email laundry strewn all over the internet at the end of last week after a botched attempt to restore their website (here).

The European Regional Development Fund has awarded Shetland Islands Council (SIC) in Scotland GBP367,500 to help it connect the islands with a fibre optic broadband cable that runs between the Faroe Islands and the Scottish mainland.

A new Mobile Broadband study has revealed that the speed of related internet connections continue to average around just 1.2Mb (Megabits per second), with some operators falling well below. The data suggests that little, if any, improvement has been made over the past 12 months.

ISP Zen Internet has launched its new range of 'up to' 40Mb fibre optic ( FTTC ) based broadband packages. However the pricing for the deals, which start at a hefty £35.25 inc. VAT per month (50GB usage allowance), are likely to place the ISP at a disadvantage against its cheaper competition.

The governments Secretary of State for Culture, the Olympics, Media and Sport (DCMS), Jeremy Hunt, has confirmed that its plan to make faster broadband internet speeds available to everybody in the UK will be outlined before the end of 2010. This will also include more detail on helping to foster the private sector funded rollout of "super-fast" Next Generation Access (NGA) internet services.
