Having my information shared by staff to forum users on a forum

I am a user of the www.walkingforum.co.uk and while being their I have had trouble with being harassed. stalked and trolled by members I have contacted the forum owner Ch and tried many times to come to agreement. One of his Moderator staff is one of the people stalking, harassing and trolling me. but I find I have fallen in to their tarp and been at time given warnings for replying back to their Libel and trolling of myself.

One of the users even comments how he knows of what posts I have removed, of what warning I receive etc. I have brought this up with the owner Ch, whos latest reply is

None of your personal details (email address, ip numbers) have been compromised as only I have access to them. If RP has been talking to his friends about action he has taken that is up to him, there are no rules to prevent that.

Ch.

Is there anything else I can do to stop this forum staff from sharing my details and abusing my rights.

I do not know how to find out who hosts the site etc although I have been told by someone else to use who is. But the results just confuss me..

tbh, there is very little you can do without proof.. and there is a number of ways information can be found..

for example, if you googled your email address and you happened to use it somewhere, where you released a little more information than you would have elsewhere.. or said email address was attached to a social networking account are just two ways such information could be sought..

I find it hard to believe that several people would be harassing you in a community unless you did something, perhaps unwittingly, to provoke or annoy them. But that's a separate issue and I'm not inclined to engage too much with this as it concerns another website that is of no connection to our subject matter on ISPreview, which is internet access providers.

In any case I think your best bet here is simply to leave that community well alone and not go back. If the alleged harassment continues to follow you around the internet, such as via email or other sites, then that would be a matter for the police and rules do now exist to tackle such things.. but only usually when the abuse is either serious (threats to your life/family etc.) or very persistent and aggressive.

As a rule you should always log any such harassment as it could be used against those that are conducting it.

What would be the best way of logging it and recording it.

Even if I keep a diary or Word Processor log, of it on my computer people will accuse me of making it up!

My crime was I pointed out several of the things several self appointed experts on navigation were telling others were false, even provided links to the Ordnance Survey sites document to prove it... Although they would not accept the OS was right..

Also several posters were complaining as their posts (which promoted their blogs) were falling down the board. (Caused by my posts getting more replies) then they just started making excuses up...........

screen captures of the most prolific parts would prolly be a good start along with noting the content etc.

Yes screencaptures (print screen) and saving any source files from emails or webpages that contain the abuse. Keeping a personal diary won't really help as that's something you've constructed yourself, where as the police would rather see the actual abuse within its original context.

I think this is a good response and close to what I'd have written.

The closest experience I have to this is when I ran, shall we say, a rather niche dating website many years ago and that used to result in members "bitching" with one another. Indeed sorting out those sort of "disputes" took up a fair amount of time.

Most were complaints about private messages received back annd forth. We did eventually devise a "policy" in dealing with those but that said, some victims seemed to be "especially involved" - often with multiple aggressors (or put those two adjectives the other way around) because you never know whether those involved have history that goes back further than the record of the private messages did and/or takes places on other sites too as Mark alludes to.

In the case of this site, there was a moral aspect to trying to resolve these things, a certain "vulnerability" perhaps - some people were lonely - in the end, some users would keep opening multiple accounts to get around blocking if they were concerted enough and the time taken to deal with it would have needed full-time staff had it carried on (I sold the site).

It is normal for Moderators to talk to each other on sites, indeed it's pretty essential to make sure the site is properly "policed" and looked after. Assuming that is the result of course.

There isn't anything that the owners of the site can do to prevent people "being nasty to one another" especially with private messaging, disable one account and another pops up - so it's worth trying to draw a distinction between "people being nasty" and potentially illegal abuse of which you might like to keep some screen shots, and it may be worth just moving on to another forum perhaps.

If, as you describe, the owners of the forum seem to promote junk content over technical information, then in time, it's likely that the forum and community will die anyway.

actually while l agree keeping a personal diary on its own wont really make any different, with supporting evidence (screen caps and saved pages) would make it more legitimate, that coupled with the fact that keeping a diary can be as much a reminder for yourself as a log of whats happened.

Sadly mark2, this is not that uncommon, it only takes one troll to get into a MOD position and abuse can start; I got so much abuse from one such mod that I not only stopped using the forum they were on, I stopped using the associated shop was well, because I am fairly certain he is also an employee, not just a volunteer.
