CD Storage

this post didnt really fit in software and hardware.. but lm looking to get a new storage case/wallet, my current one is nearly full (l burn allot of disks) £50 seems allot for a 1000 disk case (last one l got was like £25/30 a 5 years back)...

lm looking to acquire a new one around that kinda price, maybe even a CD wallet depending on how much it holds, my main requirement is that it has numbered sleeves due to the fact l keep a CD database and it makes it easier to cross reference and such, but lm having troubles finding something of a reasonable size and price that numbers their sleeves..

Most cost effective one I could find was this, but you'd need two of them:

I pretty much scrapped most of my CDs a long time ago, these days most of my software is either stored on a large HD (inc. backup unit to that), on USB drives or held in the cloud.

sadly with limited money l cant keep buying hard drives lol. l guess the only real thing l could do is get a perma marker and write numbers on the sleeves :/

..or do as I did, take a pragmatic look at how often you actually go back to use any of those CDs, and then commit the rest to the digital graveyard :) .

sadly thats not really a choice given l do go back to much of the content of my disks pretty regularly, both myself and for various friends.

Do you check and re-burn these disks every couple of years?? I found older disks, even those not used since first being burnt, were becoming unreadable after about 5 years, even though I only used Premium branded CDRs.

I had a severe prune of what I had, and made compressed archives of what I wanted to keep

Personally I've always found it better to save the content to the disk as an ISO file, which seems to work better. However a big part of the problem is that not all reader drives are well tuned to read certain types of CD/DVDr media. So over a long enough period of time you'll end up changing drives and can easily find that they struggle to read the old discs properly, even though there may be nothing wrong with the discs themselves.

I use to keep some older DVD drives precisely because I knew they were able to read my backups.

one of the main reasons ppl at home dislike me XD too many computer bits, not going to have an issue with hardware seeing as lve got all the drives that burned the disks lol.

But surely you keep buying CDRs and the price per MB is WAY higher than a HDD!
