ISP landline broadband speed estimates vis-a-vis 4G/5G

Land line ISP providers can usually give a reasonably accurate estimate of broadband speeds before the potential customer commits to signing up with them (they now have to state minimum speed acheivable). Is this possible for 4G/5G migrators? I'd really hate to sign up for two years only to be bitterly disappointed with this aspect of the performance.

4/5G speed estimates can be wildly out, too many variables like landscape, weather, obstructions between you and the mast, your hardware and (if it is an Apple device), how you hold it.

Then there is the sometimes onerous traffic management the MISPS impose.

Using a Prepay SIM or 1 month contract is advisable; but dont take a good signal where you are stood to hold up further than 30cm away.
(The distance I can move my phone to go from Emergency calls only to full 4G signal outside my daughters school).

Oh, and dont forget the difference between trees covered in leaves in summer v bare branches in winter will also affect signal strength and quality.

I'm actually situated equi distant between two 3 masts which are both less than half a mile away and line of sight (with one of them) and just a couple of houses blocking the other, so would be optimistic of getting decent signal. It's reasonably built up where I live in North Somerset, but on a small town scale. I had considered your suggestion of first taking out a short contract as a trial, so that will probably be the solution. Still a year on my Talk Talk contract left, so plenty of time for developments yet.

I also used have a visual LOS on the nearest mast; ~1/2 mile away.
I got 100% signal strength
I was lucky to get 2Mb/s download speeds.

Then someone built an extension on their house, blocking my LOS and dropping signal strength to ~80%.
Now I get 13Mb/s down and 9Mb/s up.

Go to my shop, where the signal is at best, 75% strength (same mast, but no LOS), and I get over 20Mb/s.

Go figure.

Remember if you buy the mobile device online or over the phone you’ll get 14 days to take it an try it at home first. I have a Three home WiFi (unlimited data) package and its by no means a replacement for my VM connection but it does provide a nice stead ~20mbs connection for when we’re staying at friends, hotels etc etc.
