Online gaming / ping

Everyone using BT backbone is getting these spikes; the cable companies have their own latency issues as well, so it is Fire/Pan.
And dont even get me started on mobile internet; I have had pings hit 3.8 seconds in game; and trying to get an O2 cell to work in Worcester, recorded a ping of 28,600mS; I was roughly 160m from the tower.
Still, I was lucky, 3G worked, for EE customers not even 2G is working sometimes.

Yeah any ISPs which are just re-badged BT are definitely going to have the same problem. The problem exists inside of BT IP packet routing seeing as users have proved by switching ISP that the ping spikes are solved.

Really is hard to know which ISP to switch to, I'm thinking Zen might be my only hope.

Someone should do or pay for this research, all it needs is some ping times provided for all major ISPs with a user located in the north, midlands and south. At the moment it's just stick a pin in the ISP map and prey you won't end up with a laggy / sluggish internet connection.

Do you have any information which proves that it is in BT wholesales core network, its not really accurate.

Just because a company uses BT wholesale doesn't mean they are all the same and have the same problems.

Define BT backbone? BT Retail or BT Wholesale/Openreach ?
BT Wholesale/Openreach.
I run the TBB line quality checker, and you can see the spikes 15 minutes apart throughout the day and night; up to three times the regular level.
Mine arent too bad, but it seems to vary by area.
(Not sure what was going on between 4 & 5:30pm)

lm with Sky myself, while l dont play many FPS's l do game online quite a bit. and so far my ping is pretty solid it usually sits around 16ms.

"Do you have any information which proves that it is in BT wholesales core network, its not really accurate. "

I can't and won't say what information I have, it's obvious the problem exists in the ISP / IP routing side of BT and not the Openreach network. If you're interested just read the thread I provided or perhaps the last 10 pages. You can see 'mods' issuing fixes, if there wasn't a problem then there wouldn't be any fixes...
If you read deeper into the thread you'll see users switching ISP and asserting the ping spikes are solved. Look at the start of the thread, this has been going on for ages, how can it take that long to solve a problem. It's creating real pain for customers, the only fix is stumbling on this thread, most customers arrive there at the point of pulling their hair out because they've tried every possible thing to solve the problem. There has to be a reason for not giving the fix to every customer.

At the moment it looks like Zen or Aquiss will possibly be the best option.

So your on about just BT retail?

I am not aware of any issues on the BTw network which would cause it and BT retail don't really have their own network its all run of the wholesale on to peering or transit from last time I spoke to one of their network engineers

I'm on about the ISP side of BT from a customer's perspective i.e. you do a trace route and trace the IP routers / hops for your network traffic, that's where the problem in the thread exists.

I'd be surprised if a proper ISP piggy backed on top of BT routers, if they did they'd have some serious latency problems. In fact you only have to look at a trace route for an ISP like Zen to know they're not going through any BT routers.

As an example - Zen, I have no idea how they're physically connecting Openreach customers to their network, it has to be via some sort of peering or Transit or backbone onto the Openreach network, I don't see how Zen could ever be sitting on top of a load of existing BT IP routing.

If the exchange is unbundled Zen will have their own backhaul in to the exchange which will terminate in a rack where they have their kit which terminates FTTC GEA hand over connection to the OR network or if it is DSL then they will terminate directly on to Zens MSAN.

If the customer is on a exchange which hasn't been unbundled then it will go over the BTwholesale network and hand over to Zen in one of their core POP's.

timeless you mentioned you'd used Aquiss as an ISP, is there a reason that you switched from Aquiss ?

the reason l moved wasnt due to bad service, in fact it was one of the best ISPs lve been with over the years, their support was amazing.

however l cant remember exactly if it was an issue with the price or that they didnt offer fibre at the time, as l moved ISP to obtain a faster connection, l couldnt comment on their ping times though as l wasnt really gaming online at the time, its only really been the past 3/4 years that lve really gotten into it since lve had my PS4 :p

I thought this was a dead thread but why the attention now bringing it up again and would you share the info you have meant to obtained or state whats the objective of a secret you claim to have please.

Timeless how long have you been with sky for BB now?

My aim is simple and that's to find an ISP that will give me a low latency and low jitter connection for online gaming. As I do more research all the more this is becoming a really hard decision. So far Aquiss seems the most attractive and the ISP with no information I can find with users having gaming problems.

I'm not willing to share information where I've been reached out to and helped, hopefully you can understand the morality. All I can say is to read this public information

I'm a PC gamer and don't play fifa but there's this thread regarding Sky which doesn't inspire me with confidence -

For Zen there's several threads that makes me nervous about moving to Zen

It was the price of our FTTC at the time being a tad too high. You even called me personally and remarked at the time that moving away was an extremely painful thing to be doing. Our doors are always open :)

ghost broadband ? i just buy it to see if it is real geting it setup on the 8th we will see if it is as good as it say

maddenlol it would be awesome if you could share some pings and trace routes. Note though changing ISP might do a DLM reset and enable interleaving which will increase your ping until the DLM settles down to where it was before the switch.
