Huawei B535-232 4g/LTE Router Issue

Now that adding my DNS settings into the B535 has worked can some knowledgable guru's chime in.

I subscribe to a smart DNS service. The service itself is blocked by Three under their adult filter. I believe it works if the filter is removed.

But currently the filter is activated for me. I now have the alternative DNS set in the router. The online tests I can check shows that my alternative DNS is being used.

But there are sites that I still can't access. Even the DNS provider's site for instance. I've spoken to the DNS provider and they hinted that the Three supplied router might be intercepting the DNS requests at hardware level in the router. DPI?

Does this sound technically correct?

Err, I've no idea about hardware level stuff, but it sounds *really* unlikely given that Three ship out unbranded Huawei B535 routers and you can always use your own router too.

You can contact Three Customer Services and the mechanoids will switch off the adult filter without any issue. You can then use a DNS service like OpenDNS to setup your own internet filter (completely free).

Having said this, somehow Three know what services you access, because they can determine the 'GoBinge' traffic such that Netflix etc does not come out of your monthly allowance. I imagine some kind of packet inspection thing going on.

Yes, I've come across this kind of management on you-tube and netflix too, using a VPN on the separate devices does resolve the issue though.

On a related topic - I just setup the B535 with three today (brighton). A little underwhelming in performance at around 24-31 down and 4-12 up. I had hoped the local mast had B20, B32 and with CA the perf might be a fair bit above this.

Does anyone know how to check which bands are being used on the B535, and how to persuade it to try other bands?
I've seen some mention of an android app - but I only have iOS and MacOS. Any ideas?

With B20(+B32) I would think that it's be 'last resort' for 4G, and if there is a sniff of B3(+B1) it'd latch on those with preference.

I'm not sure there's anything to do that for iOS or macOS, think it's all Android and Windows. Can you run Windows in a container/VM on Mac?
If so then you might be able to 'disable' B3 and B1 and so force it onto B20(+B32) but upload speeds are likely not to improve, assuming you're on B3(+B1) at the moment.

having finally got the the info it looks like both phone and router are b3 only. No CA

Here's the full data I have so far from the modem -> https://gist.github.com/40959b317fa15580ecc930ce1b8874d8

This definately suggests it's locked onto band 3. I don't see evidence of CA, but am unsure what to look for.

Realised the phone was iPhone8 so no b32 support. (should have tried my XS max)

Any tips on later firmware?

The router UI should show "4G+" on the main page underneath the signal bars, if CA.

Thanks.. That definately wasn't there.
I managed to get the python api working (from github) so next time around I may try forcing b20 to see if I can pickup a b20+32 combo to see how that compares. I'll also try my voda sim (can get upo to 200Mbps on XS Max but that is 4x4 and more CA) . Shame the H535 is quite limited for 2CA. Not a problem for now but if I use long term I'll move more high end. For that there's not a lot other than Huawei around (the odd ZTE, and there's netgear but missing some euro bands)

Keep your expectations in check with B20, especially upload. There's really not much of it to go around.

I just tested forced on B20 which comes from a mast somewhat further away (1.8miles/2.9km) than my 'home' mast.
There is no B32 around me to aggregate and I only get 5.9Mbps down (of a theoretical 37.5 max) and 7.5Mbps up (max 12.1).

Does anyone constantly get a new IP address? My internet has been shocking for the last few weeks and this is what I see when using Huawei Monitor

I started investigating as my connection would randomly die - yet I get 70Mb/s down and 30Mb/s up... same I'm on the B535 connection stays up for 45 minus then drops etc from typing this message I've had another two external ips.. I have the B535 being a router only, DHCP is turned off, DNS is sent to pi hole which is using 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8 etc so its pure router. I've also disabled any port forwarding I had in case it was a resource issue.

@GavinAshford thanks ref B20/32. Will see...

I've got more significant issues now (I'm not physically there now so cant check personally). network 'stalls' on multiple client devices. I did see this at w/end and briefly put APN to three.co.uk though then updated DNS and reverted to 3internet (in case of other routing etc differences). The issue is still present. Recommending to change to three.co.uk APN instead and see if that is better. If not the prior questions could be academic as I'll either give up, go to a diff router, or most likely try vodafone/voxi instead of three.

Just to check, are you testing via LAN or WiFi?
You're in Brighton aren't you? I'm wondering if with Three planning/imminently going live with 5G is impacting the network in the area in general as they're likely tweaking configurations at the moment.

Edit: I re-read and you do say you've tried different clients, so I presume it'd be a mixture.
Have you tried the router sim in a phone to see if that does the same thing?

I'm in Brighton some of the time - and that'swhere the router is....

The clients are all wifi at that location. (2 laptops, tv, 2 phones, tablet, a few other devices - nothing crazy).

I know these devices work well at home, albeit on a dedicated router with a 1 Gbps ISP (download) connection :) Can get up to around 600 Mbps on wifi.

Both are fair points and things to try, though I'm getting that deja vu thing about so many things three. Gut feel is I may keep the HW but try out voda for a month instead.

The reason I was asking about LAN vs WiFi is that some of Huawei routers that have a shared WAN/LAN port don't always correctly detect what is connected to it and switch to 'WAN' mode when it is actually LAN - causing no end of issues as it tries to route traffic through the port.
I don't know if the B535 has a shared WAN/LAN port, but it doesn't sound like what you're experiencing would be that anyway.

I’m in Bromley, here and we get full signal at all times. However I’ve been complaining of the same inexplicable stalling web pages despite speed tests of 50-70MB. I got a reply on the Three Twitter feed, and they advised I switch to 4G only on the Huawei B535-232 router.
This looked like it might work and I actually downloaded a 140GB game overnight (took about 4hrs) so there’s no issue with the connection, but for some reason if I am just surfing the web a page will just buffer and to all intents and purposes it will stop loading, as people have described.

The other consistent thing is that if a website or video stalls...I just switch to my VPN and it loads instantly, which i suspect proves the signal is not the problem.

very frustrating.

Can someone publish the APN settings? i only have 3UK and ‘Auto’.

I have/use the '3 UK' (APN profile name) with the following settings:
APN: 3internet
Authentication: PAP (don't know why its this, rather than Auto)
Username: [blank]
Password: [obscured, presumed blank]
IP Type: IPv4 & IPv6

Edit: checked the 'Auto' APN profile and it seems that doesn't have an APN value defined (its blank)

a) I got advised to go 4G only, but this was the default on my B535-232
b) I can't share the apn details as I'm not at the device, but it was on '3Internet' as default.I'm still planning to try three.co.uk, though three advised against this

Something is amiss -- I am wondering if it's B535 only? I'm planning to try a vodafone sim this weekend

The 3UK profile is 3internet.

You definitely want 3internet as you get a real IP and not CGNAT (as you do on three.co.uk) and it also disabled 3 Single Sign-On so people using your WiFi don't have automatic password-free access to your My 3 account.
