EE 4G why won't Santander online banking work?

If you disable IPv6 on an EE connection which supports it you’ll be left with no internet because like I said previously it tunnels all IPv4 to IPv6 through the use of fake IPv6 addresses.

It must be a compatibility issue with that happening and so Santander is refusing to load in some cases.

One possible workaround is to disable IPv6 in the router itself. This works on EE’s own Mobile WiFi devices and it’ll use standard IPv4.

TTIJ I'm not sure it can be disabled without breaking the internet. I vaguely recall reading an old thread about this and it didn't end well. I will have a look in the router settings when I get 5 mins spare and report back. If anyone has a B525 (not B535) and knows the answer already please chime in.

TTIJ the APN profile settings are fixed and cannot be changed or edited :

Profile name: Everywhere(default)
User name: eesecure
Password: (starred out and I have no idea what it is)
Auth: PAP
IP type: IPv4 & #IPv6
APN: everywhere

I can set up a new profile but without knowing what the password is I wouldn't get very far.

That’s very disappointing. I know it worked previously as I did that on my EE branded MiFi (the little black and yellow ones) but admittedly that was some time ago and it was EE’s own firmware. I’m not an EE customer now though so I can’t test it out again. It does seem odd though that this is even happening because presumably if the problem is widespread they’d know about it with other users kicking off. I wonder why it’s only Santander.
Have you tried clearing the browser cache just in case that has something to do with it?

Yep done all the cache clearing, TIF deleting stuff, tried other browsers, private mode etc etc. Only works with a VPN tunnel activated. I will try Kommander's suggestion when I'm back home and report back.

Try

EE Mobile Internet APN Settings
Name:EE Internet
APN:everywhere
Username:eesecure
Password:secure

Success ! (y) :D

Just set up a new profile with those details, left the auth set to 'auto' and chose IPv4 only for the IP type and Santander log-in now works instantly. Just to confirm that it wasn't just a coincidence I set the router back to the default settings and Santander breaks again, so it appears that there is some sort of incompatibility with IPv6.

The rest of the internet seems to functioning just fine on IPv4 so can I leave it like this without running into any issues or should I expect to receive a strongly worded letter from EE threatening to disconnect me for having the temerity to use non-standard settings?

Thanks for coming back and letting us know. Great help if I ever have IPv6 issues in the future with an EE SIM.

Hi kommando828 and TTJJ

I am hoping you can help as I am having the exact same issue with EE. Also finding they seem to block Sonos from connecting which is frustrating when the connection speeds are very good compared with Three.

The issue I have is when I try to create a new APN on my Huawei B525 I only have the 4 fields to fill in and no option to choose IPv4 or IPv6. Is there a get around for this or am I looking at a new 4G router which will allow me to choose this option when creating a new APN. (ignore the Three network info)

Thank you in advance,

Joe

I get the same on my B715, nowhere to select Ipv4 or 6 in Profile Management, its in Bridge mode so a lot of settings are unavailable to see if its possible to use another screen entry to change it to IPv4 only

Just swapped the router with an older TL-MR6400 and it is working perfectly. Seems that the B525 defaults (and it locked) to IPv6 and that is what causes the issue.

Thank you for coming back to me,

It's not surprising that this isn't working. retail.santander.co.uk (CNAME retail.lbi.santander.uk) is configured with an invalid IPv6 address.
Code:
> dig retail.lbi.santander.uk. any

As you can see, the AAAA record says that the IPv6 address is "::ffff:193.127.210.129". This is nonsense as there is no way to route to that address and it is a misconfiguration of their domain. If this nonsense AAAA record wasn't set you would be connecting without any issue.

That certainly explains it - with EE’s network being IPv6 first. Someone should probably tell them.

Based on the whois data, I've sent an email to produban. They seem to be part of Santander and are seemingly responsible for their infrastructure. Assuming I've used the correct address, somebody should eventually get notified.

Are EE using NAT64 or some other weird translation system? Not sure why fallback to IPv4 isn't working. But if using NAT64 that would explain why the fallback mechanisms built into browsers are not working.

Their network is IPv6 only on IPv6 capable devices.
Any IPv4-only addresses/sites get a ‘fake’ IPv6 address from EE’s DNS but as Santander have an IPv6 record the system doesn’t realise isn’t correct it’s just failing.

Hi chaps.

Another update for any other EE 4G users that happen to be passing through...

My internet "broke" again without explanation, specifically Chrome browser would not connect to approx 90% of my usual bookmarked websites, yet they all connect just fine through Firefox. I'd completely forgotten about this ipv4 ipv6 nonsense and so went about deleting cookies, clearing cache, then reinstalling Chrome and all the usual stuff, but to no avail. Then I remembered this thread.

Just been to check on my router settings to ensure they were still active as per Kommando's instructions above in the March 31 post, but discovered that they have been mysteriously wiped from my profile! I've recreated the profile and once again changed it from 'ipv4 & ipv6' to 'ipv4 only' and now Chrome is working again.

Maybe user 1rY above who has figured out the Santander problem (y) could perhaps also investigate why Chrome keeps throwing the toys out over EE 4G and refuses to work, yet other browsers have no such issue?

Does Chrome use its own DNS now by default?

Could be something to do with that as EE’s own DNS gives entirely different results as it’s spoofing the v4 addresses with fake IPv6 addresses as the network is IPv6 only (if your device supports IPv6). If Google’s using its own DNS and providing IPv4 addresses it would explain the issue.
