Uno Duo

Has anybody got any experience of the Uno Duo product?

For my connection it would be on ZW (presumably Zen Wholesale) and is significantly cheaper than the equivalent Zen connection, especially when call costs are taken into account.

The only downside I can see is the minimum assured rate of 20 mbps and an 18 month contract.

I'm particularly interested in feedback from anybody who has transitioned from their Fibre product to Duo. Did you notice any discernible difference?

If your on a 80meg connection and they would only consider it a fault if your getting under 1/4 of that I wouldn't be happy

I have been with UNO for four years and in August 2019 I switched to the Duo Pro (40/10) product from ADSL. Zen Wholesale is the provision beyond my local exchange. I gave a general review of my experiences with UNO back in August 2019.

My FTTC broadband has been rock solid with the Duo Pro product with just one very short outage affecting Zen on several local exchanges. Initially I did wonder if the assured rate of only 10 Mb might be a concern but I have received downstream and upstream speeds consistent with the predictions for my line. Of course, there have been times over the last few weeks where the speed has dropped a bit due to issues associated with the lockdown, home working etc. The added bonus with UNO is the very cheap phone line and phone call costs.

I have been very satisfied with all my dealings with UNO and my advice would be to go with this excellent, smaller ISP.

I think the two responses here reinforce my opinion that I really don't like Uno's minimum assured rate of 20Mbps on Duo (or for that matter 40Mbps on their standard fibre packages), but I suspect the Duo product is one of the most competitive packages out there for those wanting FTTC on a budget.

As cost isn't the ultimate driver for me, I don't think I will be jumping ship to Uno Duo just yet.

I'm currently considering the Duo package after 18 months of hell with Vodafone. My concerns are that Uno can't advise in advance which backhaul they will use, so for my local exchange (Hereford), the options are BTW, TTW, Vodafone or Zen. That gives me a 75% chance of moving away from Vodafone, which is severely overloaded. Worth a punt?

If you go part way through the order process, you will get the initials of the supplier. In my case, it shows ZW so Zen Wholesale. It should help confirm whether or not a change to Uno Duo would move you away from Vodafone.

Regardless of my concerns about the minimum assured rate that Uno offer, there is no question that Uno are likely to offer a much better service than the the mass market ISPs like Vodafone.

(or for that matter 40Mbps on their standard fibre packages)

That is the standard assurance rate for the majority of non-EBE services with BTW/TTB; just many don't provide that data. Similar to connection ratios and throughput rates on ADSL products of the past.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the clarification. Had to have a long google before working out what EBE was and more importantly what the minimum assured rate actually means.

Presumably the Duo product is a more contended service and therefore likely to be subject to slowdowns at peak times. So if I value my 24x7 71Mbps single and multi thread TBB speedtest results, I probably should stick with what I have got.

FYI, I ordered the Duo Advanced package on Friday, so will keep you informed on performance when it is activated.

For me, reliability and stability are my main requirements, so the "low" 20Mbps assured rate is not a big issue. My current Vodafone "Superfast 2" package syncs solidly at 74Mbps but rarely goes above 20Mbps and is mostly in the range 0.8-15Mbps with frequent (multiple times per hour!) throughput lockups and disconnections. The router remains sync'd, so I can only assume that this instability is due to the congestion and/or throttling that affects thousands of other Vodafone customers.

It should be an easy task for Uno to better what I have now. 😃

Please let me know how you get on.
Will do. My order was rejected because the wholesale network on my local exchange is already above Uno's limit of 50%. Spoke to them about it and they said they like to leave 50% spare capacity to avoid congestion at peak times, which is very encouraging. They're going to retry for upto 30 days, so I'll have to wait and keep my fingers crossed.

Something doesn't quite ring true about that.

Wholesale providers AFAIK don't give out capacity going in to exchanges and the usage on that. Try asking BTwholesale or TalkTalk business what capacity they have going in to an exchange they wont tell you.

BTW if your sig is still accurate your with Xilo aint they the same company as Uno?

I may well have misunderstood the whole thing, but I do know that my order was rejected due to unavailable capacity. I assumed that Uno have a "portion" of the capacity with the wholesaler and it's their "portion" that is already at 50%.

I'm sure someone from Uno will clarify...

Regarding my signature, was with Xilo many years ago and have not updated it for....many years. 😀

Update:
I have been connected on the Duo Advanced package for just over a week now and all seems reasonable so far. Zen Wholesale is the backbone as suspected previous to being connected. Sync started off at around 35Mb and gradually went up in steps of 5Mb over the first few days. Seems to have settled at 65Mb the last couple of days and throughput is around 30-40Mbps and (so far) seems pretty stable, although the kids were moaning "the wifi keeps stopping" the other night, but I saw no evidence of that. I think they were face timing friends, so may have been the other end at fault. After the whole Vodafone crapness, I'm fed up of explaining that "wifi" and "internet" are not the same thing. lol.
For the gamers among you, ping speed is 20ms unloaded and 35ms loaded according to Fast.com test. Not surprised at this because Zen do target gamers in their advertising.

The previous Vodafone router sync'd at 74-76Mb, so not sure if I should expect the same sync speeds??

If you post your router stats, we should be able to advise you what is happening with your line and whether you can expect any further improvement.
