EE 4G Broadband - Unlimited SIM plan?

Hello!

We recently got a new EE mast near us, and the mobile reception has suddenly gone from non-existent to excellent (though not with any of the other networks). It looks like finally we have a decent alternative to our crappy rural ADSL.

i am currently trialing an EE 4G router, on a £50 / month deal with a 500GB cap, which is the biggest deal they'll do with a free modem. It's an 18 month contract.

I use this for work all day long, so there is a lot of data flowing up and down, plus kids watching TV and movies through it etc. So our family is hungry for data. We're already 293GB into our limit, only a few days in!

I'm looking around on their site, and wondering what's really to stop me using one of their SIM-only deals that has unlimited data for only £25/month on a one-year deal, and just buying my own router. I believe their terms say this is for "personal use" and a maximum of 12 devices etc., but how enforceable/enforced is this in practice?

Any experiences or advice?

Hi,

Nothing to stop you but where are you seeing this sim deal?
I thought they retired all their unlimited data ones, with the exception of the business plans.

A downside of such new SIMO phone plans is they are not their fastest speed "4G Max" I recall, unless you pay something extra for a monthly speed add-on. Unless that changed?

Seems that similar 'unlimited' data is also available as a data add-on to existing contracts. They recently sent me this offer on my SIMO 4G Max plan:

The 1TB for £15/m is quite tempting as a broadband replacement since I typically get around 200Mb/s on my mobile at home. I guess it would need VPN to get around the 12 device limit?

I am not sure a proper 4g router would "disclose" how many clients are behind it. Even so, if you put another WiFi router behind the 4g router, then that would further hide this info, as it would only appear as 1 device, imho.

Browsers report which device they are on to websites for display settings, website version etc with a user agent, Three used to interrogate this when they stopped people using data allowances for hotspots. So even behind a router your browser sends this info unless you override it with a spoofed user agent (which is what I used to do, so my laptop got mobile phone versions of sites), so if EE use the same routine then they could count browser connections.

I’ve been using the £34 p/m unlimited phone sim in my Huawei B535 for about 4 months now. Been getting a pretty consistent 50Mb/s down and 30Mb/s up, with peaks in the morning of over 80. I don’t seem to see any carrier aggregation on EE unlike on three from the same mast, but the EE speeds are much faster regardless and don’t suffer from the page stalling issues I had on three.

Not had any issues other than one day when they were doing some work on my local mast (which they notified me about the day before) and the modem dropped to another mast that was only delivering about 10Mb/s.

The T&C’s do mention “SIMO - Includes up to 60mb/s data speed.” but I have certainly seen speeds faster than that on occasion and I believe the 5G ready plans don’t have this restriction

@kommando828 then in this case a vpn might be worth it.. but do people really have more than 15 devices in their homes that connect to the internet?

Been using the EE 5G unlimited for £35 a month in a router, get 200 plus at the girlfriends on 5G , get 50-90 at home on 4G

Just to close the loop on this, I've ended up cancelling the 18 month contract; taking out a £35/month unlimited SIM and buying my own Huawei B818 on Amazon. The router was £220 which will have paid for itself over about 14 months, plus I have unlimited data.

That "£35/month unlimited SIM" is pay as you go?
I do not see any such offers with EE, sim only yes, but on 18 month contract.

I am trialing the unlimited 18 month right now, the max I got in the B818 was 280 Mbps, one morning, didn't manage to repeat that, but speed are consistently high, usually 100+ mbps.

No, it's an additional line offering - I already have a phone contract with them - on a 12 month contract. It includes a "benefit" of MTV or something I'll never used for 3.99. I tried to haggle but they wouldn't take this off.

Any news/gossip on the rumoured further restrictions on EE unlimited data plans?

Read elsewhere that recent reduction of the FUP allowance from 1000gb to 600gb was just the beginning and that some further limitations targeting MiFi users were to follow.

Evaluating my options and don’t want to commit to i.e. a 24m plan if there will be gamechanging adjustments soon (i.e. like o2 allowing only use of “mobile devices that do not require to be plugged in order to work”)

I'm on the 18m contract I got via topcashback, so far happy bunny 2 months in.

I have not heard from them in any way about my usage, however it has been under 600GB, I don't think I'll go over any time soon unless I start binging on 4K like a maniac, but hardly have time for that.
From what I noticed I do 300-400 GB/m max.

There is also no speed limit in sight, as someone was alluding to 60Mbps at some point, I'm averaging 300Mbps+ on 5G.

I'd definitely do it again, service has been top-notch in my area, I'm getting better upload speeds than my previous download speeds on BT FTTC.

If you are that worried about limits and can spend a few more quids then you could upgrade to the unlimited data business plan. It's £50 without any limits which is very competitive considering that you may be getting actually higher speeds than similarly priced offerings from FTTP providers or VirginMedia.
