North London cabinet - not in plans to be upgraded to fibre

I live in the wilds of North London and for some reason, our cabinet (P48 - North Finchley exchange) is not in the plans to be upgraded to fibre. In the past, it was, but the upgrade works never happened. There was mention of underground services although there was never any concrete information.

I've tried talking to OpenReach but I'm unable to find out why there is an issue here and they haven't replied to my follow-up emails. I got a quote from the community partnership team but there is little reason for my neighbours to pay when most can get Virgin (unfortunately, my block of flats isn't served but the rest of the road is).

Fortunately, my ADSL2+ speeds are about as good as theoretically possible but being able to upload at on 1mbps is painful.

Given that OpenReach is able to roll-out fibre to tiny villages in the middle of nowhere, and there are voucher schemes for rural locations, how on earth can it be so difficult to serve a cabinet in North London? All the surrounding cabinets have been upgraded.

Does anyone have any advice on what could be done to force OpenReach's hand?

It may not be Openreach’s fault, it could be planning permission, land rental or duct access that’s too expensive to get it done.
Look up your local authority, they should have a broadband improvement page somewhere, ask them why it’s not been done, as they sit on the governments grants for infer-structure uplifts, not OR.

O yes the wild wild outback of North finchley i to am on cabinet 48 and have been stumped as to why this is I also went down the route of CFP i have also tired the council to no success to find out if any planning was lodge/blocked baring burning down the cabinet at the end of the road i dont know what can be done i have sent an tweet to openreach help to see what they say about the latest as BT wholesale say we can order fibre 2 but you can't and as they get there information from openreach you would think something could be happening... so I will hold off on the petrol for now lol

I assume there is history here as North Finchley is generally well covered in FTTC and VM except for small patches towards West Finchley, at Woodside Park, towards Friern Barnet, and east of Fallow Corner.

You could be subject to a data error or FTTC simply stalled for engineering reasons. If the latter then OR are unlikely to revisit now until they turn up with fibre which will not be for some time. If no VM then for the foreseeable the option is outdoor 5G (EE now available across North Finchley) or 4G.

I’m in the same situation in North London (not Finchley but Cricklewood) and only have sub-10Mbps broadband for my entire postcode. The BT wholesale broadband checker says that FTTC (not FTTP!) is Planned and I can see the VDSL speeds (DL~75Mbps and UL~20Mbps). that is possible on my cabinet. However, when I contacted OpenReach, I was informed that there are no plans to upgrade to fibre for my address.
For some reason, the BT website as well as Uswitch website says I can get Fibre 2. But I’m unable to complete the order. None of the other ISPs (e.g. Sky, TalkTalk etc.) show that Fibre is available at my address. So I wonder where BT and uswitch get their information/data from.

Same as here i saw it move to being able to order fibre 2 so I looked into it and talked to BT. They get there information from openreach apparently lol

I’m really hoping this is an indication that there are plans to make this available in the next few weeks. I don’t want to wait for a couple of years to even get FTTC, let alone FTTP.

Weeks... try months and we should be so lucky i hope it happens but to be honest its unlikely

I got this email from Openreach earlier today.

I’ve written to our MP about how it’s disappointing that we live in London and don’t have access to good internet. May I suggest other people do the same to get some traction on this?

I've done the same to Mr Offord. Got a letter back from him about it too

No, I went to local MP, asking that they review of making the fastest faster and put effort in to helping those with poor performance first. Might get better take up of services
