Huawei B818-263

Software version
10.0.5.2(H190SP1C74) che dovrebbe sbloccare il modem?

I'm upgrading from a B535-232 to the B818-263 soon, they have them instock at https://www.router-switch.com/huawei-4g-router-3-prime-b818-263.html for £138 so I will grab one and report back.

I'm currently getting about 20Mbps D/L so will be interesting to see the difference.
What county they posting from to UK?
I will give a try buy B818 and see can I improve speed. Now getting about 50-60 down and 20 up but only in one place in the front of doors 😁

Hi,
I bought a DAN version b818 from amazon.
The volte menu doesn´t appear.

If VoLTE menu doesn't appear that means that your carrier doesn't support VoLTE as a whole or just your device. What network are you using? I don't think any networks support it anyways (corrections always welcome ofc)

Most networks support volte, especially on contracts. Not sure many payg support it though, I know Voxi does for example (Lebara doesn't).

I thought it was device specific, maybe not 🤔

I know Three has VoLTE and VoWiFi on PAYG, Vodafone have VoLTE and VoWiFi on PAYG, not sure about any other netoworks.

VoLTE is firmware specific, so you need an alternative firmware and probably need a full flash not just a file upload.
I managed to get volte and VoWiFi to work on smarty before it was even launched by flashing my (now deceased) galaxy a5 with three firmware.

So after the B818 running like a dream for a few weeks (100+Mbps when the cell is quiet), I've had a few issues recently and not sure what to blame, so bear with me - this will be a long one as theres a bit of background!

The 'working' setup consisted of the B818 hooked up via ethernet to an old Vodafone router acting as a AP (DHCP disabled, static IP, etc). In addition to that we have a secondary network that had our NAS (hosting the wifes business website, had to be on PlusNet connection as it needed a static IP), and home HA system on it, so Philips HUE, Fibaro HC2, Heatmiser thermostats, rPi (Homebridge), all via a BT Smart Hub 2 and Netgear GS108 switch. This was all good except to control the house you needed to jump across to the other network, or control it via the 'net which was not too bad. No issues on it or when we used it as our main connection before getting the B818.

Now, missuses website has been redone and we've moved it to a new hosted service, which has means I no longer needed the NAS and the PN connections static IP. I could move everything back onto a single network again but rather than using the BT connection, using the B818. So I hooked up a new ethernet (pre-made) cable from the Voda router to the GS108 and disconnected the BT SH2. This is when the fun started.

Devices will join the wifi just fine. Get an IP address and DNS, etc. Speedtest will initially run ok. After a few minutes the connection becomes flakey. Wifi is strong but the connection is binary - either 100% full speed, or it will crap out and refuse to load something. Putting a device into Airplane mode or just disconnecting/reconnecting will bring it back temporarily. Loading webpages is hit and miss, sometimes it flies, sometimes it completely fails to load, sometimes you get a warning in Chrome that its taking too long but eventually loads. iPlayer has a right fit, will play something fine then stop and crash the TV (admittedly a bit of an old Samsung now, maybe a 2015). So clearly something is not happy, and I'm guessing its something routing related due to the nature of sometimes 100% speed and sometimes nothing, nothing in between. Internal connections - say phone/laptop to NAS are rock solid - full speed all the time.

So I thought it was maybe the Voda router being a bit rubbish at playing man-in-the-middle (as this is 'up' the daisy chain between the B818 and GS108), and anything just needing the GS108 internal network seems fine.

I wanted an excuse to get a proper AP, so went for a Unifi U6-lite. Disconnected the Voda router and hooked up the U6 yesterday initially to the 'backhaul' ethernet going directly to the B818 (taking the rest of the devices offline from the internet), and all appeared well. Being happy with that, I proceeded to put the 'backhaul' connection into the GS108 and put a new ethernet connection to the U6. All appeared ok again, but not long after started to be flakey again - FFS!

I dont have another switch to test, but thought why not try the BT SH2 just as a switch. So connect the 'backhaul' to the BT SH2 and then the SH2 to U6 this morning. All seems fine and has been for a couple of hours (as I write this). I did try then to connect the SH2 to the GS108 and it all seemed to go flakey again.

Sooooo.... my question is this. Given the setup:

FTTC router<>GS108<>devices - works fine
B818<>(router as) AP or U6 <> devices - works fine
B818<>GS108<>U6 (or router as AP)<>devices - flakiness

So why the flakiness on the WAN services but its rock solid on LAN in the last setup? Something between the GS108 and B818 seems not to be happy. Or another device on the GS108 network is causing it but they all played fine on the old FTTC connection.

In my quest to upgrade the home network, I'm fine with buying a new Unifi switch, I have the 'business case' for more ports and PoE, so could easily match the U6-lite with a Switch-lite 16 port. Equally if there's some issue that requires a Unifi USG then I'm more than happy to add that too, I just cant see what would cause this issue? Obviously I can go round removing one HA device at a time and see if that does it, or conversely add them to the BT SH2 that is currently being used as the 'switch' for the B818 network, but that only has 4 ports so can't get all the devices on it.

I can draw some diagrams if that helps!

Which port on the B818 have you connected your GS108 switch to? Is it the LAN only or the LAN/WAN port?

On my B535 I had all sorts of issues when using the LAN/WAN port for my switch that didn't appear when using a LAN only port. I deduced (eventually) that this was because my B535 was trying to receive an internet connection from my switch rather than send the internet connection to the switch. This may be what you are seeing when experiencing an "all or nothing" connection.

EDIT: I just checked and I have the GS208 switch.

I think its on the LAN port. According the the web interface, nothing is connected to the WAN port as expected. Also, writing this now using the B818 connection and its working fine being connected using the BT SH2 as the switch and has been all morning since hooking it up. Just means the devices on the GS108 are currently jettisoned and unreachable at the moment!

I need to get around to testing the GS108 with just the 'backhaul' to the B818 and the link to the U6 as the only two ports. Then maybe if that works, add in the others slowly and see what happens.

OK so I've been testing. Started with the B818, GS108 and U6 only. Went well, no issues, full speed. Then proceeded to add in each device and wait an hour. All good so far with the NAS, Windhager (pellet boiler) and HC2 all connected again. Noticed the HC2 side connector seemed a little iffy so swapped out that cable. Dont think it was damaged enough to cause issues, but maybe. Will keep going on device an hour and should be done not too long. See if something causes it to throw a wobbler!

Guys, this is just amazing.

Thanks to your suggestion about the IPv4 APN issue, and after a bit of F12 hacking to reveal a hidden IPv4/IPv6 field in the B818's APN settings so that I could select IPv4 (rather than the hidden default of IPv4 and IPv6), all of the applications I mentioned in my first post (at least my work laptop VPN, Tor browser, Skype video, Facebook messenger video that we've tried so far) now work.

Note: I was not able to modify and submit the existing "hard-coded" EE APN profile. I had to create my own new APN profile (using the "+" button), this time calling it everywhere_hacked or something, and using the existing EE APN settings but also setting the hidden field to IPv4.

Also, something else quite curious happened. After I submitted those new settings, the router alerted me to there being a new firmware version available, 10.0.5.2(H190SP1C74). Previously, the firmware page always indicated an error checking for firmware updates. It actually seems that the router's own firmware update code relies on IPv4 perhaps, and fixing (hacking!) the APN to IPv4 only brought that to life.

I cannot say thanks enough. I'm just amazed.

Oh, for info, when creating the new APN profile, you can make the IP type field visible in the console using:

$("#ip_type").show()

So, should I also allow it to do the firmware update? Or keep it on the existing 10.0.2.2? I'd have a very sad face on if it all broke again.
Hi Trevor

I'm having the exact same problems you did with the same router. You mentioned in a post higher up the chain: "There *is* such a field - but it needs to be unhidden using the browser developer tools."

I'm only semi-technical :) What are the 'browser developer tools' I need to use to unlock that field? I have access to both a Mac and a PC.

Thanks very much in advance to you or anyone on the forum who is able to explain in simple terms what I need to do.

Best regards
David

On a PC running Chrome, left click on the vertical 3 dots at top right, hover over more tools and a new box will appear, select 'Developer tools'.

Thank you @kommando828

@TrevorPage can you help me with the next steps - to copy what you did to reveal the hidden field? You mentioned you did "a bit of F12 hacking to reveal a hidden IPv4/IPv6 field in the B818's APN settings". How did you do that? Is it something you do once you have the developer tools window open on Chrome? If so, what command do you put in (or equivalent) and do you need to be logged on to the Huawei router at the time? Apologies for these probably infantile questions – I am so desperate to sort this out!! Thanks in advance.
