How to get the best out of your Broadband

I'm writing an article on improving existing BBand, main thrust is to tell people where's best to put your router and where to avoid (such as today's "Fish tank" mention in VMs overheating router Press Release). I have all the normal boring ones - connect via ethernet, not WiFi, don't put the router in a cupboard, or next to the fridge/microwave etc. and am looking for some more exotic or unusual ones - but still accurate please :) Time for some fun?

Part of the answer to that will depend upon the connection technology involved, since different tweaks apply to different technologies.

Yeah there's load that you can do. Generic things I like to do is: change the DNS servers to 1.1.1.1 or sometimes OpenDNS ones as they open up the internet and can improve speed; change the router to a better one (I like to use QoS and ISP routers don't come with this); cleaning the PC, this is so often overlooked and really helps in the heat it also includes updates; leave the router on 24/7, very important so the ISP doesn't think there's a fault and reduces line speed; split bands works so much better for me in my house but it works fine for others so some light testing helps; knowing your rights such as the the guaranteed speed and what help is there for you.

The rest I do as Mark says is down to it being FTTC, Mobile broadband, FTTP, ADSL, wireless, etc. I went to uni in Hull which is it's own problem and I also have moved a few times and have experience with a few different things.

In order to answer, or contribute to the conversation, I think we need to know why you're writing the article and who for.

Are you doing it for the family newsletter? Something for a school/uni project? Is it for public consumption? Ultimately what are your expectations and reasons for the article?

There are so many facets to "broadband" we could be here all day discussing the different aspects of it.

If the intention is to teach granny how to get the best from her wifi it's one thing. Writing an article for a more 'advanced' audience is something else entirely.

I like to do is: change the DNS servers to 1.1.1.1 or sometimes OpenDNS ones as they open up the internet

What do you mean "open up the internet" I assume you're referring to content filtering, which most providers in the UK who do this use network interception rather than DNS to limit content. Changing DNS in this way wouldn't circumvent that for most.

change the router to a better one (I like to use QoS and ISP routers don't come with this);

"some don't" - Whilst mass-market providers' routers probably won't. Other more niche providers do provide hardware these days that does offer QoS.

leave the router on 24/7, very important so the ISP doesn't think there's a fault and reduces line speed;

The odd reboot or overnight switch off won't cause any issues. For lines subject to DLM, it has to see repeated disconnections for it to act.

Advice is good but it needs to at least consider all options instead of making blanket statements that aren't completely accurate.
