Possible 3 Mast

Hi all,

(Got told advised to move this message to this forum) long time reader of this site but thought it’s time to join. I have a few questions I wonder if anyone be able to help me with.

The other day I got a letter from the council informing me of a proposal of the following:

(18.0m Phase 8 Monopole C/W Wrapround Cabinet at Base and Associated Ancillary Works)

From what I have read on the council website this has been approved and no prior approval is required. This will be installed I would say about a 10-15 min walk away from my house.

it appears to be this is going to provide mobile services. I have found out it’s being installed by a company called WHP Telecoms Ltd and the applicant name is CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Ltd. Which I believe is 3 U.K.

So does anyone know if this is going to be a 4G mast/transmitter/tower on this pole. Or if it’s going to be 5G? Anyone have any idea from the description of what’s being proposed.

Also does anyone know how long these things normally take from the moment it’s approved by the council to completion? Is this installation likely to improve signal in doors for me for 3 if I switch to them? Considering the location of this installation?

Sorry with so many questions but just really curious and the council application does not give me much more information. Hope someone here can help.

thanks in advance.

100% a 5G pole as it's a new three one. It can be few months to many years regarding the time scale.

My 3 pole of wonder was approved on the 4th of August Nomader, nothing happening yet. Grrrrrrr!

If you pop on to your council planning permission website you can get a whole host of goodies in the documents.

Here's some of mine.

Welcome along to the forums by the way.

I do hope you don't get your 3 pole of wonder before me, or there will be consequences, looking out my hacksaw as we speak. :giggle:

Hey,

thanks for your reply. Okay I managed to locate more information online and managed to get the documents now for this installation.
Here is what I have found as you can see below. Also reading the documents it says that it’s going to be for 5G as you guys have mentioned. This mast is also literally a few min walk from my house as it’s on the main road. (Silly question question should I be concerned if the mast is near houses etc) The document states it’s for 5G coverage in the ruchazie area of Glasgow. Now I am not in that ruchazie area. So am I right in saying from the sounds of it. The main focus is for coverage in that area. However despite the mast being installed in another area ie my area that means my area will also get the 5G coverage? Sorry it seems like a silly question but thought I ask. It’s also not a shared mast with EE so it’s only 3 network. Currently when we last tested 3 in my house which was a good few years ago we only got a few signal bars if that. I would imagine this will or should improve that. I mean does 5G work well indoors? I guess I could put the mobile broadband device next to the window?. I know it depends on structure of walls etc. With EE I get 2 bars in 4G and normally 4 bars on 3G indoors. My main plan is to get the mobile broadband with 3 and with this mast should be hopefully looking at getting great 5G signal indoors and then I can do away with the 47Meg connection I get with FTTP,. Also I saw a month ago workers digging up on the footpath where this mast is going to be and they have left some coloured marks in that footpath now I know why. Sorry if this post is all a bit jumbled up but am really excited now. Thanks Wee Bear for the welcome.

You sound in the same position as me Nomader, I don't get a full bars signal either, which doesn't really matter too much, still acceptible speeds.

I used to get into the 90's on 3 for about a year then the speeds kept dropping, and at the end of my contract was getting 10-15 which was a big disappointment.

Since finding out three have a mast planned just round the corner from me that made me a lot happier because three still do offer real value if things are good where you are.

I have since joined Smarty since I'm not wishing another lengthy contract and my speeds are normally around 30 which I can certainly live with as my main problem with slow speeds was that my 4K streaming on Netflix and Disney+ wouldn't work.

5G doesn't penetrate buidings as good as 4G does, but I'm hoping that the nearness of the new mast when it eventually appears will be just fine.

We won't really know how things will pan out until it's switched on.

Exciting times ahead for sure.

Hopefully by the time the mast is ready Smarty will offer 5G, some users are already reporting they do in some areas, so that's positive.

I'm quite content at the moment with my 'Unlimited' Smarty for £16 :giggle:

Oh by the way, I'm not a million miles away from you Nomader, so not too far to travel with my hacksaw and a packet of blades. (Kilwinning) ;)

If you want to give Smarty a whirl, here's my referral link, you and me both get a free month, should you decide to give it a try.

Smarty

No problems at all so far here with their service. (y)

Beat me to it 😂. Found out that if you are on a family plan and referr, the whole family of Sims gets a month free. Or at least in my case they did.

The antenna bearings (0, 120, 240 degrees) are in that first image, they may have submitted the application highlighting that the new site will give coverage to the zuchazie area but the coverage will be 360degrees around the site, not specifically directional.

The best signal conditions (and therefore best chance of the best speeds) will be available along the center lines of the antenna bearings, but they're designed with at least 120degree coverage so even if you were between cells signal should still be good but interference could be higher.

Also, ideally you'd want as clear a line of sight to the mast (not through a row houses, for example).

That’s a good deal you have for Smarty as the website shows I believe that unlimited plan to be £16 a month. I may take you up on the referral when the mast is installed. Right now tied into a sim only contract for a few more months. But will go on a non contract option once my contract is over. Thanks for the information. Out of curiosity do you know or anyone know the highest download speeds and upload speeds anyone has managed to get on smarty or 3?

thanks for your reply. I have noticed that the area they have in the address they have put in the planning application ruchazie is actually the wrong area. But the street name, post code, county and the map of Installation etc is literally next door to me. So that’s a mistake from the application side. So just to paint a picture. So between my house and the mast you literally have my fence. So I won’t have any issues of houses next to me coming in way of the mast or antenna. Is it mast or attena the correct term! Not sure but you know what I mean. Lol. But from what you said then that’s good 360 degrees coverage. Thanks for explaining that to me. I wasn’t ever sure if masts coverage goes certain directions only. But you have explained it to me thank you. Out of curiosity am thinking about my future set up here. Does anyone have the 4G hub that 3 provides. Or if I decide to use smarty as a data only sim is a 4G compatible hub available that people recommend that I can put the smarty sim inside?

Well there have been some Smarty tests in the 3/Smarty thread and around the 200 mark on 4G and 600 on 5G, generally just seems to be the same as 3 most of the time Nomader.

Think for 4G three are now supplyig the ZTE MF286D which is mentioned in the thread below.

This Thread

:)

The term Mast is generally used for the pole/tower as a whole, whereas Antenna are the panels installed at the top of the mast from which the signal comes from.

Some masts can/do have antennas only on some sides (so dont provide 360 degree coverage) - it depends on the local requirements of the site - e.g. if there was just woodland behind a site, there's not much point putting an antenna facing that way to cover it since there'd be little value in doing so.

Regarding speeds, with Three's 5G speeds over 1.3Gbps download have been seen, with uploads at around 10% of that (because 5G using the n78/3600mhz band is TDD and generally allocated 10/1 down/up).
For 4G alone, on a 'max config' site which the Phase 8 masts generally are planned to be, with hardware that is equally high spec and capable of 4x4 MIMO, 256QAM and aggregating 3 bands the download speeds could be in the 300-400Mbps range (highest i know if is 540-ish), and uploads of around 25-30Mbps (limited to a single band for upload)

However, radio is a shared and finite medium so theoretical throughputs are highly dependant upon the local population and load that the mast is experiencing at any given time and the signal conditions allowing for high levels of MIMO and QAM. There are no guarantees at all. If a lot of users are using the network from the site at the same time then your slice of that finite pie will be small - perhaps not even more than your FTTP is currently.

If you are seriously considering mobile broadband then do some homework, and testing, before jumping in with both feet.
Ping/latency is usually higher than fixed line. Smarty use CGNAT, which can cause issues with some websites/services/games and wouldn't give you remote access to your LAN, if that's something you do. Smarty also have a 1TB fair usage limit, which @TheWeeBear is about to test out to see if that's still a soft-limit, or a hard cut-off (which it has been in the past).

That’s really useful to know and looks impressive. Anything that beats what I am getting at home through by FTTC connection is good for me.

Thanks that’s really useful what you told me. I definitely will be doing some testing first before I make the decision. In my house we still need the landline as we have some folk that even though they have mobiles. They will still call the landline. I don’t see any providers that do landline only so I will have an element of basic broadband at home when I do make the switch.

With my current set up in the house it’s only me who uses the laptop and it’s mainly Microsoft teams but not necessary team video calls. We don’t do live online gaming apart from gaming apps on our smart phones. We have about 5 tablets in the house a Roku device and 5 smart phones. All we do is stream online like Apple TV or You Tube etc, surf the net listening to Spotify, do your usual online shopping etc, face time etc. So really I would say apart from my own work on my laptop the rest of the usage is basic. Only uploads I believe are backing up things to iCloud or google drive etc. However will def test it.

Hi all,

So I ordered myself a pay and go 3 sim just to test out the signal in my house. I have noticed around the house I get 1 bar but near the windows it’s 2 bars. My wall construction of my house is stone so that probably explains it. Speed test results varied as you can see below attached. The highest speed test results such as 42 and 62 download are outside the house, literally outside one of my main front downstair rooms. However in that main front room indoors next to the window it was about 38 download.

I have noticed outside my house in my garden the front part of my house the max signal bars I will get is about 3. So it appears to be the signal bar strength of the 3 network appears to be matching EE/BT (which I have now probably as they maybe sharing the masts.

So am I right in saying that once the mast is installed in my area that I can expect my speeds to greatly increase and to what level do you think I would be capable of? I would imagine outdoors it would quite high. However indoors do you think I can expect at least double in what I am getting now?

Thanks in advance

nomader

Honestly, it's hard to say/guess without knowing more about what frequencies and how many bands your connecting to right now and how that might be different with a new mast.

Assuming if you're currently connecting to one band, then yes, I'd expect an uplift in speeds when your mast is enabled - the reason being that in this situation you're getting a fairly large proportion of the bandwidth that is available from Three's single frequency band (band 3), indicating that your local area load on the current mast you're connected to is low.

However, if your situation is different and you're actually connected to and aggregating three bands (B3+1+32) then the speeds you're currently getting while aren't slow, they aren't anywhere near the maximum theoretical capacity of three aggregated bands - 300+Mbps, so you're seeing about 10%.
