Android 11 Ethernet Tethering working perfect / Recommend cheaper 5G phone.

Hi all,

It may already be common knowledge but wanted to let you all know that on most android phones running android 11 you can now do ethernet tethering (via ethernet NOT usb) and use your phone as a 4G/5G modem and connect to any home router via ethernet.

I was all set and ready to buy either a HUAWEI B818 or HUAWEI 5G CPE Pro 2 but won't need to now.

I'm currently using my old pixel 2 xl with a Linksys USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and the ethernet tethering is working perfectly connected to my home router (edge router x). Just to confirm I'm also using a usb c hub with my pixel 2 xl so I can charge the phone and use the ethernet adapter at the same time.

I'm now thinking of maybe getting a cheaper 5G phone that has android 11. Anyone have any recommendations for a cheap 5G phone (under £200?) that has android 11 and a good modem chipset?

From my limited research is seems that xiaomi phones running android 11 have ethernet tethering disabled

Got ethernet terhering to work on a Xiaomi Mi 10t Lite 5G (second hand £150) using ArrowOS alternative ROM. It's a great 5G router now.

Thanks for letting me know ArrowOS works :)

I've also seen second hand p40 lite 5g's for £150 I believe this has the balong 5G modem.

Any idea which modem is better, the X52 5G modem in the xiaomi vs the balong 5G modem in the huawei?

No idea, let us know if you find out.

Ps: Huawei devices cant be unlocked, so if you want to do nice things via root or ither ROMs, then it's not a great candidate.

IMO Any snapdragon products are always the best. They are the best for phone processors and I’m sure @JitteryPinger will agree they are best for modems too.

Sheer speed wise my Huawei CPE Win outperforms the x52, especially on uploads.. So I would not say it's as clear cut as that.
On the bright side I am happy we have choice: qualcomm, mediatek, huawei etc.

And Exynos!

As always it will depend on the chip version and they will no doubt leapfrog each other much depending on what functionality you need out of the phone (such as gaming). By chance a Samsung A22 5G (about £220) with a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chip in it came my way this week. Pretty impressed so far.

The important thing is the price of 5G modems are coming down. My concern is that 5G routers or their SIMs (eSIMs?) may be cobbled so that they do not compete with fixed broadband. The phone market hopefully will remain competitive and cheaper 5G phones will keep the pressure on. Tethering may become more widely used i.e a low capacity fixed on all the time supplemented by a phone when at home whether additional household, personal use or specific task. Especially if I can get VoLTE working from a desk phone over bluetooth at the same time (current project).

UPDATE: Samsung A22 5G is a good phone but currently having instability issues and crashes using Android 11 Ethernet Tethering. May be the phone (or Samsung) as I have tried substituting various kit.
Previous wifi hotspot and USB configurations fine.

No, mine's cool as a cucumber, ymmv. Perhaps he's cryptomining in the background. ;-)
What phone are you using? Mine is using Android 4.4 and time for an upgrade I think. :)

For a sec I thought you meant you had a 5G phone running Android 4.4 🤣🤣

:D

It doesn't even run LTE, just basic 4g. As a basic phone it's still ok though.
I think I need to read up on my reading skills 🤣

(I sincerely apologise for the god awful pun)
