in your setup, are you picking up public/private IP in WAN? I am also interested in this setup but concerned if I need double NATHi all,
It may already be common knowledge but wanted to let you all know that on most android phones running android 11 you can now do ethernet tethering (via ethernet NOT usb) and use your phone as a 4G/5G modem and connect to any home router via ethernet.
I was all set and ready to buy either a HUAWEI B818 or HUAWEI 5G CPE Pro 2 but won't need to now.
I'm currently using my old pixel 2 xl with a Linksys USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and the ethernet tethering is working perfectly connected to my home router (edge router x). Just to confirm I'm also using a usb c hub with my pixel 2 xl so I can charge the phone and use the ethernet adapter at the same time.
I'm now thinking of maybe getting a cheaper 5G phone that has android 11. Anyone have any recommendations for a cheap 5G phone (under £200?) that has android 11 and a good modem chipset?
From my limited research is seems that xiaomi phones running android 11 have ethernet tethering disabled
With 3internet APN I get a public IP.in your setup, are you picking up public/private IP in WAN? I am also interested in this setup but concerned if I need double NAT
That on smarty or 3?With 3internet APN I get a public IP.
Three (contract)That on smarty or 3?
Yep, Xiaomi has tethering. Using it on my Redmi note 9 right now, the Wi-Fi tethering is amazing.I've bought the cheapest phone 5G phone I could find on amazon to test if there was 5g signal in my area as the Three 5G coverage map said there wasn't.
Which was the Realme 8 5G that was £135 at the time.
this is average speedtest result in a certain spot although i have seen up 750Mbps down
currently no ethernet tethering even though the OS is based on android 11.
there's currently a Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G available for £140 which uses the same chipset as the Realme 8 5G which might support ethernet tethering or be easier to install a stock android rom on
Xiaomi has been quite reluctant to add ethernet tethering afaik, the main 3rd party ROM (xiaomi eu) also doesn't support it currently.I've bought the cheapest phone 5G phone I could find on amazon to test if there was 5g signal in my area as the Three 5G coverage map said there wasn't.

I use USB tethering just fine, is this not what u mean?Xiaomi has been quite reluctant to add ethernet tethering afaik, the main 3rd party ROM (xiaomi eu) also doesn't support it currently.
If going for xiaomi, be prepared to fiddle with other ROMs.
Wifi tethering can still be an option.
My router WAN is showing a private IP so I have double NAT unfortunately.in your setup, are you picking up public/private IP in WAN? I am also interested in this setup but concerned if I need double NAT
If your after a 5G phone and don't want to mess about with roms etc. you may want to take a look at some of the newer cheaper Moto or Nokia 5G phones running Android 11 as they should have the Ethernet Tethering option as they run stock android.Any recommendations for someone who might not wish to hack the bootloader or add external air cooling?
He is talking about the Ethernet Tethering option which is new to some Android 11 devices but has been left out on Xiaomi devices running android 11.I use USB tethering just fine, is this not what u mean?
No, I'm talking actual Ethernet, eg by means of something like this adapter which allows you to use a network cable and charge at the same time:I use USB tethering just fine, is this not what u mean?
Oh okay, I was getting confused between usb and Ethernet tethering. My badNo, I'm talking actual Ethernet, eg by means of something like this adapter which allows you to use a network cable and charge at the same time:
Many thanks. If your after a 5G phone and don't want to mess about with roms etc. you may want to take a look at some of the newer cheaper Moto or Nokia 5G phones running Android 11 as they should have the Ethernet Tethering option as they run stock android.
Examples: Moto G50 £159 / Nokia X10 £200 or maybe even a second hand phones like the Moto g 5G plus or Nokia 8.3.
You also have some midrange 5G phones from Samsung and OnePlus that have the ethernet tethering option but they tend to be a little more expensive so you would probably be best looking for a used one.
Note meatball has mentioned Ethernet Tethering is unstable in his Samsung A52 so keep that in mind if looking at Samsung phones.
Amazon are current running a 30% discount off their used warehouse stock so you might want to have a look to see what they have available. Amazon France had some used very good OnePlus NORD 5G's available for £130 a few days ago.
I'm only using a 4G pixel 2 XL myself which runs cool so don't have any experience when it comes to 5G phone and how hot they run.
that's good to know and a deal breaker for me to go on the 5G phone ethernet tethering route. many thanks for your information. My router WAN is showing a private IP so I have double NAT unfortunately.

I use it the other way around, but I'll test when I get the chance.is that device to give LAN to your phone?
or does it work both ways?
any chance you might've seen a 2.5gbps+ one somewhere?I use it the other way around, but I'll test when I get the chance.
