Abandoned mast

Saw this MBNL site as I was on a walk today, appears to not be broadcasting so I wonder if it has been abandoned?

Is it on cellmapper? It looks like one of the modded ones for B32. Also, the sticker on the cab looks decently new

It is, I placed it there ages ago on a walk, I knew there was a mast there and cellmapper detected a band 3 mast nearby so I assumed this was it. but I could not get a signal from it even when standing right next to it.

What? And also, i use 3 not EE, and a nearby band 3 site is/was detected a few months ago, and i know of no other mast locations in the area.
That EE only MBNL site has been dead over 6 years, thatā€™s as far back as the data goes, probably 7 years or more itā€™s been dodo. You can see the state of the top of it.

Three obviously didnā€™t want to pay half the running costs ongoing.

Perhaps it was built as a EE/Siemens test unit?. A lot of Siemens products now run on M2M sims (traffic/lights etc) so itā€™s a high possibility EE having superior 4G 800MHz or itā€™s newer high speed bands/VoLTE (live camera/Commercial Driver Emergency Call Base) maybe being tested at the time it was built whilst 4G/Volte/4G live camera was in its infancy.

SIEMENS Traffic Management Systems have M2M GSM access, camera & solar power back up to work in the scenario that there is a power cut to feed back to the Local Authority/Police camera hub can see the situation.

Perhaps EE were the GSM test partner?

In 2012 Nokia-Siemens started a EE partnership publicly saying ā€œvending machinesā€, it would have went much further than that, but you donā€™t let the competition know everything do you.

Siemens I know where testing bus tracking via M2M and EE build up a few sites there.

Nokia-Siemens also developed the EE Signal Box

NS was still struggling before 2010 https://www.eeworldonline.com/nokia-siemens-to-cut-17000-jobs/

After the Nokia buy out of Siemens in 2013 things changed, maybe it was never activated? EE built 2011/12 ? never went live? . But Nokia offloaded Nokia Mobile to Microsoft after Siemens was bought out.

NokiaEE partnership remained after BT bought EE in 2016, the last year has brought that partnership closer, 2020 was bumper Nokia EE year, HUAWEI 5G replacement and 4G to air contracts.

Siemens done a lot of the legwork for M2M with EE and Orange/T-Mobile roaming partnerships esp for traffic systems, then Nokia lost that EU data sales footprint when EE went to BT.

Anyway Iā€™ll bet itā€™s not the only site around Siemens thatā€™s not live, building developments have probably pulled some of them test bed EE BST sites down now, maybe they werenā€™t ever live either.

That's not EE only wtf are you on do you have your glasses on or your contacts in, the sticker says H3G and EE limited MBNL.

Well MBNL built sites for both or solo, as per the original T-Mobile/3G Hutchison agreement regardless back then they were all labelled MBNL, itā€™s a standard sticker of that time from MBNL.

A lot changed when BT become a monopoly backhaul pipe provider to MBNL sites owning EE, conflict of interest.

Now CK Hutchison is building outwith MBNL direct with CityFibre.

Donā€™t be so rude, I canā€™t help it if you are assuming things.

The phone number printed on that standard MBNL sticker was very likely circa pre BT/EE MBNL changes and it was the MBNL Emergency number back then, that site has been dead from 2014 as per Data Protection act 6 years record keeping requirement. It probably never lived given the sudden Siemens buyout by Nokia.

Maybe VF should buy it, seen as their network is going to be dead soon here in the UK
Vodafone have a 4G mast up the road from it :p

a 3 4G mast is shown on cellmapper, very closeby thinking this was it i moved it to this location, and i dont know of any other masts in this area that are unaccounted for

Looking at google streetview, your right about that sticker, its new and has not been on the cab that long, maybe it is transmitting, but i couldnt connect to it today., the same pole and cab have been untouched since 2010 or so as far as i can see.

The site in question "10635"
I don't believe that 10635 site is located correctly - the cell polygons calculated by cellmapper don't tally up for that location.

The photo of the monopole in the opening post is of a legacy EE site and feels most likely to be turned off now given the closeby site, to the north west, covers that area.

Possibly Three have recently requested a site inspection at that old EE location with a view for swapping it to a new 5G enabled pole; which could explain the newish MBNL label being added.

Sounds pretty plausible

I rang the phone number for sh*ts and giggles. It connects to Ericcson, appears to be for 'site access'. Maybe to shut it down when there's engineers there? Not a clue lol

Respect is something to be earned

Its recorded in 2014 as a EE only (MBNL managed) site by the now disbanded Mobile Operators Association.

Respect the data, it came from the source to a co-owned Association.

Away argue with EE/MBNL about the facts they reported.
