EE New 2021 5G Router

Recently signed up to EE 5G mobile broadband and got sent the new 2021 5G router as they no longer do the Huawei CPE.

Im getting some half decent speeds but would love improve it a little with an antenna.

Was hoping someone could help me identify the connection type I need (See picture of back of router) and maybe suggest a non expensive antenna I could stick on to the inside of my window that could increase signal by 5/6db?

Any help would be massively appreciated.

I think you may need some adaptors for those connections, I've put a suggestion as to a search (on Amazon) below but worth checking with EE first

YILIANDUO RF Coax 4G LTE Antenna Adapter SMA Female to TS9 Male Straight Gold-Plated Connector for 4G LTE Antenna Hsdpa Huawei 2G 3G Antenna UMTS Mobile Broadband (Adapters)

As to an antenna - a lot of people recommend Poynting XPOL-2-5G Antenna .

Good luck but please, please check with EE first, there are so many types!

By the way, I did a quick look at the EE offering, it does seem expensive compared to Three so hope you're getting decent speeds to make up for it....

Thank you very much for the suggestion!

Yes its quite pricey compared to Three but EE have the best coverage in my area so im stuck with them until Three/Vodafone expand. I went for the unlimited data plan - £55p/m

I spoke to someone at Panorama Antennas yesterday who thought these were TS9 connectors. So I've gone with the below;

DMM-7-38 | 4G/5G MiMo Desk Mount Antenna

Hopefully it fits, but if not its good to know I can get adapters.

What sort of speeds are you getting with this? also any stickers on the bottom you can take photo of to find out the brand?

Hi all, I've just received one of these - so far so good on EE 5G here in Bath.

Just FYI that there are no obvious identifiers on any of the device stickers; however looking at the Admin UI html code it appears to be a Zyxel NR5103

There's not much info available online that I can find and nothing about the aerial connectors. The main hit was on the Zyxel service providers site - https://service-provider.zyxel.com/emea/en/products/5g-nr4g-lte-cpes/5g-nr-cpes/idus/nr5103

Hope that helps!

Cheers,
Mark

Just an update.....So I've been getting varied speeds with the router, anywhere from 30mb to 250mb. Usually around the 100mb mark during the day and 200mb+ in the late evening.

I'm also on the EE 5G network on my iPhone 12 Pro Max and have run a few speed tests on it. These come back at 300mb+ regularly. As both devices are connectiong to the same network im guessing the iPhone is just better at achieving high speeds compared to the router.

Either way I'm very happy as I was on 10-35mb MAX before this.

In regards to the antenna I purchased (mentioned above), I tested the router a few times with and without it and to be honest there wasn't any difference so I don't think ill be using it. Luckily I only paid £18 for it on eBay so no huge loss.

Would EE still have a data limit at 750gb/month with this unlimited offer?
Not sure what is the FUP these days, 600GB or 1TB, as there seems to be some conflicting information, but what we know in practical terms is that it is not enforced automatically. EE will probably want to get in touch with you if you consistently and significantly go over it, I would imagine.

I went over the limit a few times and absolutely nothing happened.

That's only because the EE heavies couldn't find your address Lucian.;)

Probably because he doesn't have two car parks

LOL I'm never going to live this down am I?

I only have one car park and two cameras, honest Gavin.

I should actually just have named them camera 1 and camera 2, not car park 1 and car park 2.

Does that make any sense, even I'm getting confused now. o_O:D

My EE account shows the limit as 1TB/month
Good to know thanks! It’s annoying they have these limits at least for their mobile broadband packages as the monthly cost is higher than sim only plans and they are ultimately designed to be used in the home with multiple devices.

You’re the first person I’ve come across who’s shared their experience on the new router. I’m moving to a new flat which isn’t covered by Openreach Fibre and 5GEE is the only viable solution for fast internet (No 3 or Vodafone options either) so I’d love to pick your brain a bit. I’m not very technical and my knowledge on networking is very limited haha.

What is the range like?

I know it has a battery but I assume you can leave it plugged in all the time without any issues? (thinking about overheating)

Is it possible to disable the WiFi from the router? Reason I ask is if the range isn’t great I’d like to use a mesh system (something like the Deco M4).

Do you (or anyone else on here) know if it would even be possible to set up a mesh system with it? I’ve got one set up at my parents house with an OpenReach Modem but I suspect for the 5GEE router it’s just plug and play as it doesn’t support modem only mode. I know double Nat will be an issue but the only device it would impact would be my PS5 which I was hoping to connect to the LAN Port of the 5GEE router and then use the WiFi from the mesh for wireless devices.
