I am using an edgerouter x in load balancing mode. But I don't seem to get the full throughput for downloading. Example, the three 5G router on it's own can do 700mbit. But when combined with 350mbit virgin media, i only see an increase of around 100mbit, but the upload seems to show the total combined bandwidth no problem. Not sure why that is.

By the way the total monthly cost for this endeavour is

£29 per month for VM 350 (retention deal).
£10 per month for three 5G data-only SIM.
£7 per month for EE unlimited 5G SIM

= £46 a month inc VVAT.
 
Funnily enough speedtest is the only one that sees my two 4G connections and combines them, as I direct all port 80 and 443 to EE the rest only see the EE connection. Have you tried the PC app and not the webpage to see if it differs.

I was just thinking that.

I just tried nperf and added the screenshot from that, will try the ookla client next.

Is your EdgeRouter configured to tunnel all three links to some cloud server?? If not, I presume it's just using its WAN links directly?

Each WAN link has its own IP address, and a single TCP stream must bind to a single source IP address. Hence unless the traffic is tunnelled to some point which exposes all the traffic as a single IP address, the only way WAN balancing can improve your throughput is if there are multiple concurrent TCP streams, and the router binds each TCP stream (via NAT) to a different interface.

This can happen with a multi-threaded speedtest, but the effectiveness depends on how many TCP streams there are, and how many are bound to each interface.

speedtest.net uses a different port number for its test traffic: use wireshark or tcpdump to watch the packets. (I see it using port 8080, which I believe is their default, but in principle it could depend on which test endpoint is picked)

Correct but I use all the bandwidth most of the time when its needed, unless a routing rule is in play, based on my usage. So my Draytek is currently reporting 15 devices with 45 sessions, this laptop has 15 of those sessions, the CCTV's have single sessions and would only see one connection. Of course if you do not use the internet in the same way I do then it will be different. For example I use Freedownload manager for downloads which has multi session downloads, peer to peer uses the full bandwidth too.

Yes It's using WAN links directly. It's not tunneled, it's just round robin between the links. Speedtest is doing multiple concurrent streams, you can see it sometimes even in the website where it says using a server "and 3 more" .. but yes I'm aware of how it works this was just a bit of fun for me while I happened to have the 3 links available. We'll be ditching VM soon and probably the 4G link too.
 
How did you get the EE unlimited SIM for £7?

Tell em they suck and you'll quit. Signed a contract and then the speeds plummeted. Talked to EE, they gave me a temporary discount but then yanked it after 3 months. I complained, they said no they won't release me or give me the discount again, escalated it and said I want a deadlock letter and I got a chap who said we'll move your contract to £7 a month.
