Help Picking a VOIP Phone

Morning all. So we switched to FTTP about a month or so ago but at the time we left our landline with BT. We are now looking to port over our number as well, bit expensive to maintain just the landline with BT.

My new ISP (Fibrus) does offer VOIP however I have also been looking at sipgate, as I do like the idea of not having the phone locked to our current provider.

Only issue is Fibrus have locked down the voice settings on the provided router. So I am looking at getting a VOIP phone or some sort of base station I can plug our current phone into.

Looking for something pretty basic and cheap, so long as its cordless and can do all the config stuff on its own without needing the phone ports on the back of my router.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Gigaset N300 IP. Either with or with answering machine, is a great VoIP capable cordless DECT base. Modest money too.

There’s a wide selection of Gigaset handsets. These can be bought as a bundle from suppliers like Ligo.

I had this dilemma when moving my parents over from Virgin to Sipgate as they were moving the broadband to Sky due to it being over half the cost cheaper but Slys landline offering being poor value. Virgin number that they have had for 20+ years was ported back in 2020 for a cost of £35 with the directory listing included with Sipgate and it was super pain free and nothing but positives from them in the time since.

Anyway to answer your question try and get a Yealink W56 or W60 with the DECT base cheap on eBay used for around £40-50 and you’ll not look back. Parents love them HD voice quality loud speakerphone and no DTMF tones when dialling out a number all sent digitally like a mobile phone call.

Hope this helps!

That's what I went for, the N300A with answering machine. Compatibility is good, it worked with our existing Gigaset handsets but when one of them died there was no problem finding a current compatible handset.

I use SIP Gate for inbound, as I could get a number with our area code. Outbound I use "Localphone" as their rates are lower.

Agreed. Honestly for around fifty quid, I don't think you can go wrong with them.

The N300 has been around for something like 10 or more years. It's now got some successors but they are still producing the N300 and as you know it also supports multiple active VoIP accounts and can support multiple simultaneous 'lines'

Thanks for the suggestions and help everyone. the N300 arrived yesterday (£30 on ebay). Got it all set up and its showing connected to sipgate. Just waiting on them to send me out a letter with a code to verify the account.

I will do a bit of testing first once that's done before I ask them to port the number from BT.

I would second the Yealink phones, although caution needed if picking them up on Ebay as usually they are locked to BT but sold by unsuspecting owners who never use the Digital Voice aspect. The handsets work just fine as additional handsets to another base station so some bargains there, it is the base station that insists on calling home and adding settings for someone else's number.

Highly recommend the Gigaset ones, either with a Go-Box 100 or N300 IP type. Simple to operate, highly reliable and they work with any Gigaset phone.

I've got the nicer type with the metal handsets but it works just as nice with the cheaper handsets.

Thanks all. Had been waiting on the letter in the post to activate the service with sipgate but got that sorted today.

Maybe I am been stupid but I was under the impression I could connect more or less any phone to the N300 box and it should work but tried two today and not getting anything.

The box it's self does show connected on the sipgate web site.

The N300 IP box should work with essentially any DECT phone.

You may need to change the settings to ensure that incoming calls are being delivered to the handset. If you look how I've got mine set up, the INT 1 is handset one, then I've got it set up to receive all calls.

Its a BT Everyday Phone (single). I also did try a corded phone we had about the house, but its as old as the hills so didn't expect it to work.

The BT Everyday handset should register, for very basic DECT/GAP functionality (make/receive calls that's about it) but you cant plug in a corded handset into the N300 as its not an ATA.

Far better functionality is available for the Gigaset ecosystem of handsets. Its the same for most brands of DECT bases - all the bells and whistles are available when coupled with compatible handsets from their own product families. When you go cross brand the functionality is usually quite limited.

The RJ11 copper port on the N300 is for connecting to the PSTN...not a cabled handset.

Ok i feel a bit silly I was just connecting the base to the RJ11 port expecting it to work 🤣

Got it all up and running now, cheers!!

Just need to ask them to request our number form BT now.

Once you put the port request in, pay the fee, it takes around 10 days, maybe sooner to action.

Then once the porting is complete, you should have both the Sipgate supplied number and your previous landline number associated to the same Sipgate Basic account/SIP-ID.

Calls in to either of the numbers will be received seamlessly and you can choose from which of these numbers (or another number) will be your outbound CallerID from the Sipgate dashboard settings.

Does every Voip cordless home phones require additional base stations?
I imagined handset would just connect via WIFI settings.
House is getting full of base stations for Hive,Burglar alarms, now separate Voip base stations and phone bases

Usually a single base that connects to either the old PSTN landlines /the analogue port of an ATA or ISP supplied router. Typically they use DECT wireless transmission to the handsets. Handsets often come with a recharging base but have no other connectivity. Secondary DECT bases / repeaters are available for large houses, small business etc. Larger business often use a roaming setup with multiple DECT bases but this is just for info.
