Race between providers

I'm currently on BT's FTTC (with a very distant cabinet) delivered by overhead poles and seeing ~15Mb/s.

I opened a pre-order with Trooli FTTP back in February with a 10 week lead time. Now in mid-May, and a new pole later, I'm still waiting to get connected. Since then Openreach have also got a move on and seem to have laid fibre to the post.

So now it looks like there's two providers on the pole that supplies my house

I think the black box at the top is OR's and the metal frame is Trooli's - is that correct?

I emailed Trooli to see if I could get an updated estimate for when I might go live, but was told they're seeing delays in a location 150 miles away. Go Trooli CS!

Checking BT's site I still can't order FTTP so obviously OpenReach haven't finished the plumbing needed for me yet.

Do I cancel Trooli and go with an OR-based ISP to give me more flexibility in the future, or hold tight and hope? Is there a site I can check with OR availability in case BT haven't updated yet?

I'm not familiar enough with Trooli's kit to answer the first Q, but the BT Wholesale Broadband checker remains the best way to keep tabs on actual FTTP availability, I'd say.

But what I would say is that it can take a long time post-build before a new FTTP service goes live, so it could be later this year on Openreach. Seeing as Trooli is ridiculously cheap, you've probably not got much to lose by retaining your order with them.

Thanks Mark. I've taken a look and I'm still confused!

This seems to suggest I can only currently get FTTP if I want to pay for them to lay the fibre.

Further down the page is also says
> The exchange is not in a current fibre priority programme
and
> FTTP is not available.

When I know that we are in the 2021-2026 tranche and some in the town have been offered FTTP from the exchange.

I guess it's a waiting game then!

Oh! And since posting yesterday I've seen Lightspeed are also starting their rollout in town. We're going to have some very busy telegraph posts around here!

The box at the top of the pole is an Openreach CBT , there is a double bracket to the left where the trooli node will be placed with room left if they want to upgrade capacity.

In fairness, the install isn't complete (that big coil of black cable) - so the checker won't say it's available.

It'll appear on the checker once the service is in the ground and you can actually order it. I suspect BT are following some altnets around after clearing ducts etc to ensure they have a claim on each pole if they end up with multiple providers wanting access.

Here in Reading the competition's certainly started warming up. No FTTP in our area at all until this month - CityFibre did their build in March and have just gone live here, and just as this has happened Openreach have turned up and are busy installing CBTs on the same poles. Here's an example, which presumably answers the question of how much paraphernalia can be fitted at the top of one pole: 3 Openreach copper connection boxes, a CityFibre ASN and 2 Openreach CBTs on a stand-off bracket...

Trooli are the first provider in my area to start doing Fibre, I'm still waiting on the actual install due to some blocked underground ducts and things (tomorrow should be fully activated!). I saw some Openreach vans in the road the other day when it was scorching hot so I went and offered them a drink, checked out what they were doing. In his words, now Trooli are here, they need to be so they don't lose customers. Funny how they've had years to install fibre to people without and it's always a no-go but as soon as there is competition, they are straight on it.
