Voneus in Priddy

Hi,

After about a year of waiting I believe I am finally getting Voneus fixed wireless tomorrow - fingers crossed. They claim up to 100Mbps but I think I am more likely to get about 24Mbps. The fastest people in the village are getting is apparently 35Mbps but I am a couple of hops away. Still, it is a big improvement over the 3Mbps I currently get. It has been a very slow and frustrating journey and I have not got the bunting out quite yet. 24Mbps should be fine for me for the next couple of years, especially when my son is away at uni. I do run some bandwidth hungry bulk jobs but they can be scheduled to run during the night. Online backup also becomes a possibility but at limited volumes. Although the package is touted as 'unlimited' I have been told my actions will come to their attention if I start hitting 500Gb to 1000Gb a month. Realistically I am likely to not go over 300Gb a month in a busy month, mostly during the wee hours - some months will be very low usage.

4K streaming might not be stable but I am not too worried about 4K at the moment. Looking ahead, we might end up getting Gigaclear in Priddy as part of the phase 2 CDS rollout. I have no need for the top tier for the foreseeable future but it will come to a time when 24Mbps is not enough so an option to upgrade is definitely attractive. I have made do with 3Mbps and I have coped remarkably well but the upgrade is well overdue. Also looking forwards to dropping the OR line and going VOIP - I have a UPS to keep the system up for a little while if there is a power cut.

OK, it came early, installed today. 35Mbs up but only 18Mbps down. Apparently the download speed is being worked on, there is a dodgy relay point that needs tweaking. The 35Mbps up is great for offsite backup which I want to use. Also, good for running a webcam for work video conferencing when working from home. Would be good for p2p file sharing but that is not my thing.

Thanks for giving us an update on this, been wondering what happened since your last update in June. Have they given you any ETA for fixing the dodgy relay point? I suspect it's just not optimally positioned.

Could it be to do with the Mendip Transmitter that's on your doorstep?

Or have they used that to mount their kit on? I know they do allow it for a price

I think it is just an alignment issue or something. No ETA but they have been working on it so hopefully a fix soon. I am 4 hops away from the main mast. I think the topology gave them a headache coupled with some unhelpful villagers. Hop 2 is the problem, it actually works better going straight to the main mast without full line of sight but a line of sight solution should work best so that is what they are working on. I am confident they ill sort the problem out. With only a night using the service it is night and day compared with what I had before. The speed is also stable so I am a happy camper. Sure, some people have hundreds of Mbps but I will cope just dandy. And I live in a fantastic part of rural England. I have been struggling a bit as I recently developed epilepsy and can no longer drive so I need to work from home on some days - now I have the bandwidth to do it properly without clashing with my son :)

I don't think it is anything to do with the Pen Hill mast and there is no Voneus kit on it. It costs a fortune to put anything on the mast so it is not really an option. Just alignment and maybe the need to add another transceiver pointing in the right direction. Should be possible to fix :)

Unless I am being very thick the service is not supporting incoming connections so no port forwarding, games, FTP server hosting etc. I find it hard to believe my son is the only one playing games but there you are. I am back to Sky ADSL for the time being as I can't stand my son whinging. Waiting for Voneus to respond. Interestingly they do offer fixed IP address which is kind of pointless under the circumstances I would think. Let us see how good the support service is. I had already asked for a fixed IP but no news on that yet.

I assume you mean "because I am on a DYNAMIC IP" since fixed and static are two words for the same thing. I guess they must have some form of CGNAT setup that's being overly restrictive. I do wish that ISPs would clarify these things as it's an important consideration for customers and may conflict with parts of the new Net Neutrality rules.

Voneus in Cheshire

We have experienced the same problems with Voneus in Tiverton, Cheshire. In February 2018 we were told that three months was the estimated time to deliver super-fast wireless broadband to our rural parish, parts of which are badly served by BT (less than 1 mbps download speed). I understand that Voneus have had a stand-still on all? Cheshire projects over the summer, but this has been compounded by a total absence of information from them. I initiated this project on behalf of the Parish Council and spent a lot of time and effort publicising it and getting support, so I feel badly let down. Neighbours point out that, from the Voneus news, the company seems to be far more interested in acquiring other companies than in delivering on promised installation work. We are still in the dark.

Hi Gordon, I live in Mouldsworth, a few miles from you. I have recently been informed by Voneus that they will begin the build for our area this month and will have it completed by mid summer. No fixed date on going live though. I, like you, spent many months gathering support from the local parish and bordering communities. It might be worth giving them a ring, I did and seemed to get more information that way.

Hi,

Reviving an old thread :) I thought I would update on my experience with Voneus - seeing as I am thinking of dropping them. The speed has been all over the place - as high as 80Mbps and as low as 20Mbps but in general about 45Mbps. The service for me has been quite reliable but others have not been so lucky. A load of people had an outage for a week or so due to firmware upgrade on some core kit that then required the receiving CPE equipment to also be flashed - unfortunately it took Voneus ages to understand there was a problem, they just kept telling people everything was working and would not accept otherwise! The support line is a joke, nobody answers. There are other people in the village with issues but in all honesty I can't say for sure if that is Voneus or some internal issue such as crappy home WIFI.

So, why am I thinking of leaving? Well, mainly because I am as mean as dirt and I can get an unlimited Vfe SIM for £20 a week and get almost the same speed and probably with greater reliability. The 4G latency is not so good but that is not an issue now my game playing son has fled the nest.

Truespeed may be coming to town but that is moving slowly. God knows what is happening with CDS and Gigaclear? I somehow suspect that I will end up with FTTH and 4G failover at some point in the future.

The main complaint with Voneus though is that they did half a job in the village. They promised people a service and in at least one case installed the receiver and drilled holes in house walls and abandoned the job. Lots of people who desperately wanted a service were let down - and these are properties that were within reasonably easy reach.

Overall though, the Voneus ride has been largely positive for me.
