£50,000 Fine for Copyright Breach

The Government plans to increase the maximum fine that Magistrates' Courts can award for online copyright infringement from £5,000 to £50,000.

The Government and the Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO) are consulting on the plans, which would allow Magistrates' Courts in England and Wales to issue summary fines of £50,000 for online copyright infringement.

The larger fine is proposed for commercial scale infringements, where the person involved profits from the infringement.

:hrmph:

They might as well make it 5 million pounds , a fine of £50,000 would bankrupt most families...

£5000 is more than enough punishment for the average downloader..

It's not for the average downloader:

Commercial sale of illegal content is a completely different ball game.

Yeah Right, and RIPA is only intended for OC and Terrorists.

Note the words MAXIMUM and AVAILABLE.

It is only the MAXIMUM fine AVAILABLE to Magistrates.
That doesn't mean that they will necessarilly use it.

If someone makes £1,000,000:eek: from copyright crime, £50,000 will seem a paltry punishment.
