100 metre wireless connection

the basis of my story is myself one side of a motorway is connected a exchange that is 8km from my house and therefore cant even get 512k

People on the other side of the m-way are connected to a different exchange and close enough to support 2meg. (which due to work is what id want)

Ive had permission off one of the landowners to have a line installed in one of his sheds, he was not prepared to have a antenna on his house.

Obviosuly there is no power into this shed and id just have the phoneline and whatever equipment needed. We are only 100 metres apart. Is this possible without a direct power supply?

Im new at this and work are prepared to pay reasonable costs. But need to give them some rought prices

any ideas?

You would need a wireless router with decent external aerial and some sort of power supply to run this. First thought that comes to mind is a car battery (12v), and a solar trickle charger from someone like Maplin, along with a power inverter - one of the cheap 20-30 pound ones would do it.

I can't guarantee it would work faultlessly - there's always the chance it could go flat, and the temperature variations in a shed might mean you would need to insulate the router in the winter, but if I was desperate I would definitely give it a go!

As far as cost goes, £50 for a cheap router, maybe up to £100 for the solar charger, and £30-ish for the inverter. I couldn't guess at the cost of an aerial, possibly in the £30-50 range?

Why not use an Access Point which can get it's power over Ethernet? That way (depending on distances from the house) you could have the ADSL Router in the house (all snug and warm, etc.) and run a standard (ish) Ethernet lead to the shed to plug the Access Point into. Then plug a better antenna into this. (I'm thinking of doing exactly the same thing for a friend - I'll let you know if/when/what it happens.)

I use a Dlink 900+AP with a Dlink Power Over Ethernet Kit for a similar project. Its all very cheap and chearful, and although its only 802.11b std. it works without fault at around 1.1km with full speed. PoE is rated to work at 100m but I wouldnt go much further than that, without a repeater.

If you have good LOS from the shed u plan to mount your antenna on, I would suggest using a cheap 13dbi parabolic type antenna, as these provide good value for money and will without doubt provide full speed over such a short distance (~100m).

good luck
