10gb ms01

So I like to tinker and originally I had a udm se but I missed running opnsense/pfsense so started looking again for a low cost, low power device that I could preferably run various o/s on and fit a 10gb rj45 card due to both my lan being 10gb rj45 and YF hand off being rj45 for 8gb..

I recently bought a miniforum ms01 as it seemed to meet all my requirements. I opted for the i5 12600h and sourced my own ddr5 ram (16gb). The device has 3 nvme slots (1 of them is gen 4)and 2 x 2.5gb nics and 2 intel x710 sfp ports both being intel and 1 pcie slot.

I started with sfp to rj45 modules . These ran super hot so I fitted a 10gtek dual rj45 nic as this suited my network setup better. 10gtek advise no additional cooling is required but given how small the device is I modded the top of the case and fitted a simple 5volt usb 3 speed fan.

So far it's been great. Core temps are 29-35. Cpu and ram use are minimal. I have the fan on low speed and overall consumption according to my watt meter is between 20 and 30w depending on what's going on. Not seeing any issues with heat so the fan may not even be required but I was to happy to fit it anyway. It's nice having one machine I can easily re-configure for different setups fairly quickly and easily.

I appreciate its probably overkill but I wanted something that met all my requirements which this box does.

I also found a printable stand for it which is a great addition.

That's a great looking device and I've been looking at these for a new Proxmox/CEPH cluster to replace my old hardware.

What's your thoughts on moving away from Unifi to opnsense? Is the services/feature set pretty much similar and was it easy enough to migrate away?

I was a PFsense user (two VM's in HA) for many years then moved to openwrt (RPI4 with USB Nic) when FTTP arrived, then Unifi UCG when that was launched recently (and using that just now). It's been flawless and I do like the UI for managing all my devices/services.

I want to move to the You8000 package but I'll need to upgrade my network which is only 2.5G at the moment for the servers and still using UAP-AC-Pro's around the house, so I'm looking at s 10G overhaul at some point this year...

My network is quite busy so that's my excuse to update to the faster package :)

Hi there. Thanks for your message. I was originally a pfsense/opnsense user so after getting the udm I just missed my old setup .... The udm was the only bit of equipment I was using from ubiquiti I didn't like the interface tbh.

I built the ms01 purely for the job of doing my 8gb/8gb connection. I didn't want to use a sfp to rj45 module due to heat concerns I have/had. The dual 10gb card works fine with my cat6 network and 10gb rj45 multispeed switch. The only issue I have come across is the 10gb card on the lan side reports a "lan in" error x2 points everytime our laptop logs on in pfsense. All my other hardwired and wireless devices have been fine. I updated the laptop bios and wifi driver but it hasn't cured it. It logs it as a "tx frame error" but doesn't seem to affect anything at all and only does at login via windows so I'll live with it. Other advice has been it's not really an error as such so I'm ignoring it 😁

The usb fan was about £8. Nic manufacture said no additional cooling required but I was happy to sort it anyway due to the space/heat etc..my cpu is running at about 30 degrees which seems fine.

the udm pro se will do 8gb without packet inspection etc so if your unifi integration is important it might be worth looking at one too but you would have to use 1 sfp to rj45 module at a minimum for yf connection as both of its 10gb ports are sfp.

Beware if anyone buys a 13th Generation one. The CPU's are defective, this affects *all* of them.

Microcode patches should be out now, though which fixes the stability issues.

The manufacturing issue was also resolved, so a 'newer' chips "should" be fine.
Worth keeping an eye on and making sure the microcode update has been done though, for sure.

How on earth will you know your CPU is going to be unaffected though? And you aren't sent a unit that is 6 months old?

Frankly I won't be buying 13/14th gen at all now because of this. They do sell a 12th gen one however, that one will be 100% unaffected.

Also, if you've already had a unit for some time it might already be permanently damaged. This is why they've extended the warranty on them for two years.

Finally, check out the Gamers Nexus coverage on how Intel has handled this, it has frankly been a complete clusterfunk by Intel on this one.

The manufacturing issue was resolved by a date (I can't rem it but its findable)
The CPU will have when it was made on the lid, in relation to when built.

Some of the Gen13 will be rebadged Gen12, and they also have their own issues.

Yep - quite possibly advanced wear for no gain. I completely agree that it's been handled poorly.

I just don't think it's worth writing off a product completely because of it, especially if the warranty will cover it off, depending what it is you will likely be replacing it within the warranty period anyway. (and if its new / unused and then you apply the microcode then you shouldn't be affected anyway)

I mean, that is my/your choice to buy or not buy as desired, of course.
