My bro wants adsl for gaming (who doesnt) but is very limited in money. It will be mainly for gaming, and due to the money involved, there are only a few choices...

Metronet, but they look to be out because of a £69 activation fee.

Plusnets 150k service

Tiscalis 150k service

I want to know if 150k is ok for the newer games, or do you need more bandwidth?

Also, I forgot to look, what contracts do they both have? (how long)

I am a bit dubious of tiscali cos their billing is crap. Unfortunatly they have th better deal, free modem and activation, as plusnet has £30 for activation (not bad tho).

It should be, you will be getting slightly better pings than 128k ISDN coz of the increased upstream bandwidth as I understand it, 150K will have a 128K upstream?

For me gaming runs fine but as you can see by my sig, I'm running at 2Mb but my ping would be roughly the same as a 512K connection because we both share a 256K upstream but for a 250K connection I'm in the dark

so to show a 256k upstream here's mine..

It would be interesting to see what the 150k - 250k pings are like :)

and here is mine to same..on 512k :)

I got 512 adsl too. Im just wondering of a 150k adsl connection could handle something like halo as well as my 512k.

I'd have thought so. You don't actually need huge amounts of bandwith unless you're hosting.
Even so, just tell Halo the connection speed and let the netcode adapt itself to suit.

Great. In that case I gotta decide between tiscali and plusnet.

Anyone tell me what gaming is like on these, and what their pings are like?

Tiscali hasnt had any complaints in a while, so I will consider them.

What I read somewhere is that a 512k will have better pings than a 2048k connection (adsl) due to less downstream bandwidth although I wish I could remember where that article was tho to show what I meant, now I've seen it in practice with wd40's ping results which is 5ms lower than mine on average, so if the 250k is 256k up? you never know, lol :)

PlusNet are using/reselling Tiscali's service, so I'm not sure how much difference it makes which one you choose. I'm with PN (512) and have never had a problem, I have no idea about Tiscali.

Just in case you'd forgotten or didn’t know, but Tiscali broadband enabled xchanges aren’t necessarily the same as BT x’s, so you’ll need to use Tiscali’s own broadband checker with Bro's tele No.
IIRC, 70%-90% of UK homes can get Tis’s 150K Broadband service, so the odds are iin his favour.
And don’t forget that it is a 12 month duration contract.

I see you’ve not mentioned GIO who I believe also offer a cheapish 150K Broadband service.
I’m not recommending them (same as norfett isn’t really recommending the 'other' Broadband service if you read it carefully ;)), just mentioning it to you so as you can tell Bro about it. However, you'd be well advised to look at the GIO forum first, even if its just for the sake of comparisons, then tell him

Ta Paul.

I have been following the Gio forums for a while, as they have been active for a while now. Youd be a fool to signup with all the current posts. Maybe later I could consider them if they drastically improved, but with so many people saying the phones arnt even answered I wont dare try it.

Will check with tiscali checker, didnt know bout that.

Im not gonna go on about that other thread in this thread, but suffice to say I got my reasons:p

Ta for the info. Gotta convince me dad to let him have it now! Shame about metronet's activation fee. They would have been perfect otherwise.

Save you maybe messing around later, this URL should take you direct to Tis's Broadband availability checker:

http://www.tiscali.co.uk/products/broadband/check_number.html?type=bb150&code=ZZ-NL-11XY

I had at a look at Tis's FAQs and they state 70% of homes are within a Tis enabled X, so I was a little overly optimistic before in thinking maybe upto 90%.
As with BT though, even if the house is within an enabled X, it's still subject to a line test.

Gotta convince me dad to let him have it
Another poor old Dad whom I can sympathise with and probably relate to.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Shocking! Cant get it! Only 512k and upwards. (Takes the mickey doesnt it?)

Damnit, that buggers things up a bit. Someone said plusnet runs off the tiscali 150k service. If so thats it. Damn damn damn. Oh well, hes gonna have to do with a modem, unless he saves up the £69 himself...

lol, Its the same for me..

I can get 250k upto 2mb but if i want 150k, "sorry your area is not covered"

Sorry for your brother Bartman – what a lousy bad start to the weekend.

I assume that because bro can get 512k, they're utilising a BT enabled xchange rather than their own upgrade.
I know that Tis’s own upgrade program has been quite rapid and they still haven’t finished yet, so maybe there's hope that they’ll get round to your brothers area in the near future.

Fingers crossed.

Yeah, he can get 512 no problem.

Oh well, the hunt for a cheap provider will go on, but I very much doubt I will find one, because the adsl is about as low as it will go for a long time.

And Im looking for one that has at least a few people go on it, I wont risk putting him onto a lemon.

Just a thought that may help a bit, but Tiscali has it’s own message board where apparently some of it’s support staff post messages and the like.

Perhaps it’s worthwhile posting a message on the appropriate forum asking if anyone knows if your brothers area is due to be on the 150K Broadband service at sometime in the near future.
You may have to register in order to post a message there – I don’t know because I’ve never looked any of the messages there let alone posted one.

Try Plusnet Bart, their cheapest 512 is £18.99 and they do the 150 but ask them if they use BT or Tiscali.
Never know you might get lucky.

Cheers Paul, but its a small village that was lucky to get adsl. Still, I will have a look at some point, ta for the info.

Reset, do plusnet charge an activation fee for that one?

Yes mate, thats the one drawback with plunet, but you can have a deal where the fee is all in with the monthly payment, but it's dearer, naturally.

Damn. I Understand why ISPs charge it, cos if they got a low monthly, then they have to charge some sort of activation fee (which BT should be looking at reducing by now).

Trouble is, me dad wont go for it. Meaning me bro cant get to play online.
