2 x 8mbit DSL Lines sharing bandwidth?

mboswell

ISP Rep
Scenario:

2 x BT PSTN Lines next to each other on the wall. They both have pairs coming from the external BT cable and one assumes that this is the case all the way back to the exchange(?) 2 seperate pairs that is.

Both DSL connections are with the same ISP.

DSL Modem routers, of the same brand, are attached to each line and both have seperate public IP addresses and are no way connected to each other via the LAN ports.

I performed a number of simultaneously tests and ensured the data was from different sources so I made sure it was not the server at the other end balancing or limiting the speed. Tests performed were things such as speedtest.net, FTP and HTTP downloads.

At the point of the test I performed there were no other devices connected to the routers apart from 2 PC's connected the tests were performed on.

The results I noted were very strange to say the least, as my question below asks.

I hope someone can shed some light onto this for me, thanks in advance!

Question?

Should I see 2 seperate bandwidths (2 x ~8mbit) on each line or is it perfectly normal to see load balancing occur? across 2 seperate DSL lines.

If I've read your post correctly I'd expect to see two separate 8 Mb lines, is there some contention taking place elsewhere ? Who's your ISP ? :hrmph:

Yes it seems to be direct contention between both 'independant' lines, its very odd one line downloads at 600k/sec+ then you start the other one going and they even out. I really couldnt believe it when i saw it :/

If anyone has 2 lines that they can test in the same way, please do and let me know what you find!

I would rather not say who the ISP is at this point, id like to get an all round opinion before sticks get thrown about in every direction, hope you understand.

I think PeteK (could be wrong) has multi line experience, you might want to PM him (assuming he doesn't see this thread anyway).
