20 minute page load delay

When I log on to my broadband provider I have to wait up to 20 mins after connection before any pages load, or I can get a ping returned to me. After this delay, I can surf normally, at expected speeds. If I loose connection for any reason, I must wait another 20 mins to reconnect. This problem started suddenly about 9 months ago, and I still can't crack it! At first the delay was around 10 mins, but it has doubled in recent weeks. If I connect to the same service with my laptop, using the same modem, I can surf almost immediately after log on, so the problem must reside with my desktop PC hardware or operating system. I am on Windows XP home, SP2 fully updated. How can I set about diagnosing the problem? Do I have to begin with a full XP reinstall, or might there be a simpler solution?

Another forum suggests it may be a networking conflict. I have disabled my ethernet, and uninstalled my wireless adaptor, but this makes no difference. I also have 3 x 1394 connections, which appear as LAN or High Speed Internet connections, but are actually a card with 3 firewire connections for external hard drives. I have windows firewall disabled. I don’t have any firewall software installed. (The problems began before I attempted to add routers, which I have since returned as I could not not get any of four different models working reliably). What else should I look at?

Many thanks.

hmm strange, in all honesty this is pretty hard to troubleshoot without been in front of ur system, all l can suggest at this point is backup and re-install and if that fails it could be hardware level altho even then it sounds very weird

I would recomend a check of your system for spyware using Ad-Aware (aawsepersonal.exe). Also you need a firewall, try Comodo (freeware). You might like to add spywareblaster 3.51 as another way of keeping the O/S free of any further spyware attacks. Your system may have been hacked or invaded with some sort of virus/spyware. Hope this is of some help to you.

Regards Paul.

It sounds like a DNS problem more to me make sure you have them manually assigned and any torrent or p2p programs turned off they could be hammering your upload which can cause problems with slow loading pages, which could also be a virus, have a look at the task manager see what the network port is doing if its got any usage what so ever, also try looking at the hosts file see if anything is set in there.

actually thats a point.. firstly does your system act slow to begin with? like its loading allot of data? and if your running under XP does SVCHOST use allot of the processing power.. in this case it maybe apt to visit the hosts file

location of hosts can be found here
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

usually that file will contain something like this

Code:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

however if it contains significantly more than the above it can cause the system problems with DNS until the system completely loads the data which can take a while depending on enteries..

you could call the hosts file a local DNS file, for instance l could set an ip with a domain in order to locally lookup a site without remotely worrying about DNS however if l wanted to l could even make up my own shortcut domain and point it to an IP, altho that does depend entirely on how a server is setup

load delay

many thanks for all your replies folks!

I think timeless has cracked it. My hosts file contains hundreds of IP addresses of sites that distribute malicious code. I think these were placed there by one of my spyware programs. (As I have tried several, I can't remember for sure which one might have done it..probably spybotsd14.) Is it ok to delete all these entries, and see if it solves the problem?

It also contains a localhost address I once used for newsgroups. Can this go as well?

thanks

I went ahead and deleted every entry except the localhost. It fixed the problem. Thanks very much for fixing an issue that has really bugged me for months!

no worries, glad it had helped funny tho originally the problem was bugging the hell outta me as l was trying to think of how to help you and suddenly it came to me :D, just remember tho this file can be so damn useful when DNS plays up with websites the way l see it is if you require access fast to your favorite sites just set the IP and domain up and cut out the middle man especially if those sites tend to have DNS problems :D in any case glad my advice can be of some use :)
