I'm not too fussy about having a fast broadband connection, the advantage of having my telephone available to me appeals. Looking for ISP's that provide this without a twelve month contract. Anyone advise. Also what is the best modem to buy and where can I get it extremely cheap

Well its always best to look at comments from current customers in the forum before choosing your new isp.

There are many now that do not require a 12 month contract and/or give you the modem for free.

One isp is currently doing Broadband for £9.99 a month (+vat) and its not capped, although i have not heard from any customers on it yet.
You could go with a well establised isp thats been around for ages and pay a little more.
Paying slightly more a month than another isp will give you free modem/connection etc. Going for some of the cheaper monthly payment isp's means you have to pay connection fees, pay for hardware or be on a long contract. (always read the T&C's)

Myself i use one of the top10 isps for broadband speed, a Fujitsu FDX 310 modem (Thompson Speedtouch for my laptop).

Oh and if you have not been on broadband before, just make sure you have a firewall and antivirus as a friend got infected within 1 minute of logging is unprotected pc onto broadband for the 1st time.

If you're after a really cheap external usb adsl modem them look no further than Staples. They sell the Tiscali subsidised Zoom 5510 for < £17 - the idea being that you're supposed to sign-up with Tiscali (yeh right!) However the instructions tell you how to install / configure the modem if your internet connection is with another supplier! ;)

I mentioned them in the other thread, including vat it is £11.74 a month + £82.24 set-up fee. Total = £223.12 for 1st year for a 512K service.

(Don't forget to take account of the set-up fees when comparing ADSL ISP's costs)

As I recall it's a 3 month contract and only available for 1000 new customers a month, but on the positive side their prices are guarenteed for a year.

You could look at pipex.

£17.99/month free activation free modem no bandwidth caps

Although it's not technically a 12 month contract if you leave within the first 12 months they will charge you the £58.75 activation fee.
