Advice please.

Has anyone got any experience of the 2wire 2700HG home portal ?

Are they any good at holding sync, giving a good sync rate, on lines with high attenuation (>60db) and average SNR (7-9 dB) ?

I've never heard of 2wire - but have a chance to get one of these fairly cheap.

Cheers

Get it.
The 2700HGV is the BT Business Hub, not the Home Hub which is something entirely different and inferior (i.e. rubbish).

They are normally locked to BT, and need to be unlocked before they will work with other ISPs, but this is an easy matter.

I've treid the Netgear 834, Speedtouch 585v6 and 2700HGV. The Speedtouch hold sync a lot better than the Netgear on my line (attenuation 51dB) and the 2700 even better. I normally sync about 6Meg.

Not guaranteed for everybody, but the 2700HGV is one of your best bets for a reliable sync on a poor line.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the helpful responses - the links each of you gave were well worth reading through - and have just about convinced me that I should go with the 2700HG.

However its not clear to me if the 2700HG provides MAC address filtering for the wireless network - I've got well confused trying to read up on this topic.

Does anyone know ???

Cheers

EDIT: OOPS that's the 1800HG :o sorry

There seems to be some demos of the UIs here if it is any help http://shastademo.2wire.com/ - there appears to be two UI's, a user and a management interface.

A quick glance didn't find any mention of MAC address filtering, but I'm not convinced there's much point in having it anyway as it is trivial to copy a MAC address and WPA with a long random key provides very effective security anyway.

I currently use a Netgear DG834GT (with the uberGT firmware) and get occassionally disconnects - my stats are 63dB / 9dB (downstream) (sorry can't remember upstream). My maximum sync rate (with a strong tailwind) is about 600Kbs.

Would it be worth swapping to the 2700HG or the Speedtouch which Ned recommended? I know I probably won't be able to get up to the next step up on the speed scale but a more consistent sync would be nice.

thanks!
:)

Every report I've seen on the 2700 HG(V) has sung its praises, both for holding the line and for improving sync speed.

While there are no guarantees, my own experience and that of others suggests you'd be better with either the Speedtouch or the 2700HGV - probably the 2700HGV is just preferable for stability.

Yes, it does and is very easy to use.
