They sell on eBay for as little as £22 plus postage, if you are patient to wait for an opportunity.

not entirely sure whether they are properly SIM locked, tried mine with a 1p (EE) SIM and even VoLTE worked (sort of), did not try data.
The stock three firmware is a pain, but the modem isn't locked.

In my experience they are locked to Three in that the DNS is hardcoded to theirs and if you are on another operator name resolution will not work.

I think it will still allow you to set bridge mode, if you have a use for that and you can then just use your own DNS settings, but for most people it will be a hindrance nevertheless.

Upgrading to the Nordic firmware as documented by meritez in this forum will fix the problem.

Is setting the DNS in the clients a suitable work-around for a small number of clients? Or does the router's inability to look up names or perhaps distributing broken DNS cause a lot of problems? Perhaps switch off DHCP?

It's difficult to get cheap and good both together when it comes to tech.

Yes, if you can set the DNS client side, then it overcomes the problem, but this is a fiddly operation, especially on smartphones.
You could switch it to bridge mode then use your existing router, that could work.
