4G, to FTTC and then FTTP

I’m in a rural area where the fibre speed is pretty rubbish (30mbps). We’re a one-off new build up a small private drive, without a BT landline and owing to getting LTE fast 4G, I went with an EE unlimited data sim and a HUAWEI modem. We average 50-60mbps, but two of my kids have ordered new digital version games consoles. I’m worried about potential game downloads of 100GB x two consoles.

Yesterday I had an Openreach contractor unexpectedly come to my house and explained a new build FTTP project is coming to my postcode. He asked me if I’d be interested and did a rough site survey. What are the lead times for these things getting done ? If I was to get FTTC installed to help out short term, on the additional bandwidth required for the consoles, am I likely to be able to switch mid-contract once the FTTP service goes live? Thanks, Matt.

The downloads are not the issue on 4G, its the response times eg ping times if you game online. FTTC will have better pings.

If you pick a current FTTP ISP for your FTTC then before placing your order check with them, most will regrade.

As for timescales, how long is a piece of string.

Put you details in

and see if it identifies FTTP as being introduced soon, it does for me but I know it will be post Dec 2021.

It does show FTTP as being available soon. I’ve chatted to the Openreach engineers working in the road and they believe they’re going to be finished in about a week. So hopefully it will be sooner than later.

The target for a community run project is less than 12 months from contract signature, where Openreach are doing this themselves I would imagine this is shorter.

However, I would question whether this person was actually an Openreach representative. Openreach don't sell ISP services. I would imagine this person was an ISP representative, obscuring the fact they they have a commercial relationship with Openreach. Go carefully.

Some fibre city areas are having the ducts to the properties inspected and roped as a part of the build, rather than a 2 stage installation task. There were a few threads on Twitter about it last week when letters were dropped through doors then the contractors turned up a couple of days later.
