512k unthrottled/unblocked adsl isp?

hi everyone, i was wondering , is there an isp out there that goes for around 15 pounds a month , serves south east england (kent) , and has no limits on the usage whatsoever? like i understand it when 1mbit lines and above have some kind of cap on them, but if its as slow as 512kbps the limit of the adsl itself should un-justify any additional limits, like for p2p stuff?

for that price not a hope, the best you will get will be in the low £20.00 mark. But then the isp will probably be crap.

If you are on such a restrictive budget, do you not need to consider the cost of a modem and activation fee?

Of the top of my head, amongst the cheaper 512k uncapped packages currently on offer, are:

Tesco:
Package includes free activation & modem.
Total cost per month £19.97
Total cost per year = £239.64
Minimum subscription term of 12 months applies, otherwise a £70 contract termination fee is payable.

Zazizam:
First & second months subscription = £9.99 per month
Subsequent subscriptions = £17.99 per month.
Activation fee = £58.75
Estimated USB modem cost = £20.
Total first year combined cost = £278.63
Average monthly combined cost during first year = £23.22
Costs for subsequent years = £17.99 per month, equivalent to £215.88 per year.
Monthly contract terms apply, although the possibility of a contract termination fee needs to be verified.

I’ve not used either of the above services, therefore I’m afraid I can’t pass any comment upon their quality or reliability.

there is no termination fee - as there is no contract. So if you changed your mind after 3 months - theres no cancellation fee.

if we imposed a 12month contract - providing free activation, then there would be a termination fee within the 1st 12 months. So if you changed your mind after 3 months, you would be stuck with the activation fee - which is what Tesco (whom charge £70 from the previous poster), and many other 12 month ISPs impose.

If you already have 512k adsl - then the year 1 cost would be £211.63 (equivalent £17.64 a month) - which includes the samll £11.75 migration fee - again there is no contract - and migrations can also take advantage of our £9.99 offer

if any one would like any more information - please contact us, on 0870 225 1214 (with reference code Z4) - lines open 9am-5pm mon-fri

Zazizam dot com,

Thank you for clarifying there is no termination fee involved and also mentioning you accept migrations for a very small fee.

If we could obsorb them into our monthly costs - then all of our users would have to pay slightly more per month - or would be bound to a 12 month contract - which is something that we do not really want to do, nor introduce a capped service in the future - in my opinion - capping is a step backwards

Zazizam dot com,

If you do not already do so, you may wish to add on your website that no termination fee is payable for your package.
A number of ISPs advertise they don’t tie a user into a 12-month contract, only for the user to then discover there is a termination fee payable for ending the agreement.

i dont have a contract on mine but i paid for activation, no caps and im on 512k and my line aint dropped in over 750 hours

ah ok...
thanks for the general info, im sure that other people visiting will find it helpful...

now , for my specific situation... well, to be honest im living with housemates which suck up the line with file sharing, through a router that i bought, and they make life very unpleasant for me if i block their file sharing ports... however, they did agree to pay for another line , because i will configure 2 routers to distribute the internet access between us... a 512k line that will be for file sharing, it can be as heavily throttled as necessary and nobody will notice , because theres the 1mbit line that we currently have , which will be used for normal internet browsing... i have all the hardware, and i already have a new telephone line, and me and my housemates are simply waiting for a new internet connection

the one condition of that 512k line that i want, is that there are absolutely no blocks on it, every connection attempt to every port inbound and outbound should suceed, sans the line itself being overloaded... it will keep my housemates happy , because they are using emule and it depends on the ports being responsive etc etc... it will give them an illusion of a high-performance connection, when in reality it is not so...

sorry for not making it perfectly clear - our adsl packages come with no limits/caps (so you can download as much as you want, for the same price). Also, our products are P2P friendly - so things like emule, kazaa, etc, will work.

Hope this clears things up

As you are getting 512k - you can benefit from our £9.99 offer, if you sign up by Sunday - see www.zazizam.com/signup/adsl

The best way has got to be with NDO - £19.99 a month for unlimited, unrestricted IPStream (not shoddy, slow, crappy Datascream (eg tescos)) and you get it from an ISP at number 2 on the Top10 here and an ISP thats been around since 1995 what does that say for level of service?

Seriously, I'm with NDO and it kicks serious bottom and blows all other ISP's out of the water, very fast, excellent 24/7 support and cheap too. See their users forums too - www.ndousers.com

in my opinion you would be better using the 512k for the normal internet use and the 1meg for the file sharing but be warned if you open all the ports on the router u will need a good firewall on your computer

Thanks to a recent message by one of our fellow members (rruwalton), my attention was drawn to the following NDO 'Fair Usage' clause (which I fully understand and agree with) :

"Generally we would view data transfer of 25Gb or more per month to be of concern and we would want to discuss this with our customer."
http://www.ndo.com/ndo/Products/Fair_data_transfer_policy/fairdatatransferpolicy.html

The 'Fair Usage' clause may not fulfil carmatics stated requirements, ie:
... no limits on the usage whatsoever...

I think it would be near impossible to find an ISP that really truely doesn't mind you downloading the very maximum. I know Plus net lets you choose the premium service which really means you can download anything, but I'm sure they would have something to say if it was always being used to download off things like Kazaa etc :(

Nick

Maybe you could try www.spinier.net They do broadband at £19.99 a month, only £29.99 activation, only thing is you need to supply your own equipment but that shouldn't be a problem. It's also a monthly contract which might suit you more with your housemates if you move or something.

ok cool thanks, you guys are very helpful!!!

right, after considering what you told me, ive decided that what i need is something robust to near-abusive internet usage... by 'no limits' i kind of meant limits of the sudddenly-stopping-yer-connection kind, reliability of the kbps is not going to be an issue with this line because of the redundance of the file sharing programs , like they just get left on all day and sometimes i think housemates dont even realize that its on, much less find out that their downloads have suddenly slowed down for no reason... hopefully, the low speed overall should also mean a cheaper connection...

so, its either spinier or zazizam for me then... thinking time...

the reason im choosing a 512k for file sharing, is because of its higher symmetry like the upload is always 256k anyway, and file sharing involves a sizable amount of uploading... also, the file sharing will almost never reach full speed because the heavy uploads will clog up the bandwidth usually used for acknowledgements etc etc... plus, having a 1mbit line to browse the web and download normally also means there is alot more flexibility compared to having a 512k line , and the difference in speed directly affects our internet experience, as compared to having file sharing on all the time with its very variable speeds...
