5ber discussion

So the summary seems to be...

5ber - good value and decent app, slow delivery and questionable longevity of service based in rumours

Esim - more expensive and a crap app that you might struggle to get working

5ber works just fine for me. Demand for these products should last for years.

Wouldn’t it be quite nice to figure out how to make this work ourselves? They can’t be doing anything special, those SIMs likely cost cents on aliexpress and the rest is software

As a user of quite a few esim.me and 5ber eUICCs, I would be interested to know how I can manage eSIM profiles using a card reader connect to my Mac. I'm aware of the utilities pySim-shell and lpac but I'm unsure as to which economical card reader is compatible, other than it needs to support ISO 7816. Does anybody have a suggestion?

I can't remember where but if you search for it there are guides on how to do it and what is required hardware wise etc

and here was I thinking 6 days was already too long, Royal Mail here is a bit slow too but anyway mine is coming via Evri they say and not Royal Mail, so we will see.
Ordered the 5Ber E-Sim (premium - $25) on 02jul24,

received yesterday - 15jul24,

so took 13 days (9 working days) to get it and delivered in the UK by EVRi.

Ordered another on the 9th. will see when it arrives.
re: programming it, i've been searching but not found much what search terms should one use? I found ones relating to general SIM use but that's not what we need. How do we get the content of a QR code onto these things?

if you are talking about getting the content of a QR code onto the 5Ber Esim itself - once you install the app on an Android phone and insert the 5Ber Esim into a free sim slot on the phone and then log into the app there is an option to Add Esim by scanning a QR code and then the Esim is downloaded onto the card so you have to have an internet connection on the android phone whilst doing it.

Then there is a list of all Esim on the 5Ber app and there you chose which Esim you want active on the Esim and that it really.

no i've already got a 5ber sim (and esim.me) and know how that works. I mean if we're programming it ourselves without the apps.

ah ok then,
I've a feeling we will find out here soon 😊

Edit:
depending on the software used, I reckon it will likely be uploading an image of the QR code.

or manually enter the URL address and code according to this -

I'll just pay $12 and save myself the trouble. And don't buy any more phones without eSim.
I use them for non-phone devices without eSIM support, which are never likely to gain eSIM support. Also, now that I have loads of esim.me cards that are locked to a particular management device, I have to think about what will happen when that device is lost/stolen/broken because it's €10 to transfer each esim.me to another device. Not to mention that the esim.me app seems to become more unreliable with every passing day!

Thanks for that blog post, that's really helpful. It's also interesting to see there's a magisk module for rooted phones!

esim.me's app is horribly unreliable yeah. and im doing exactly the same, I have two routers that both have eSIMs installed via these EUICC cards

In case it interests anybody, in the end I got an Omnikey 6121 and used it with EasyLPAC. It's a very straightforward setup which doesn't require driver installation and works fine on my M1 based Mac.
