5G and the weather.

Anyone else seeing a drop in speed today?

I've gone from the usual 500-600 mbit down to 250-300. Trouble is i'm not sure if it's my router dealing with the heat or three's mast. I don't feel like going for a walk to confirm it.

Three network.

EE very stable all day, didn't notice any problem, but didn't speed test.

Starting to wonder if my Huawei might be overheating a bit now.

Because 5G moves more of the processing to the edge of the network, there's more equipment in that enclosure at the base of the mast, which in a 4G world more if which would have typically been in central data centre. Therefore, if the cooling on the equipment enclosure at the base of your mast breaks or can't maintain the temperature differential required then you can probably expect problems.

There's also been a good peppering of brown outs and power problems in the hotter parts of the country today which could have had negative impacts.

I would hazard guess that more likely that people's patterns of behaviour will have been changed by the hot weather. You are contending with more users.

Maybe heat has a factor on the efficiency of the equipment. But I would say more people being under the same mast (as they are not where they usually are) spending more time on phones, etc - eg more people working from home, kids not being in school - just my opinion 😁

Yes this occurred to me as well, but as someone who regularly relies on 5G since it's faster than my cable subscription I've noticed the patterns of high/peak use and low utilisation. The drop today is well beyond any normal peak use.

My CPE Win has been on the roof for 2y now, come summer or winter. No vents or fans, these things are really well made.

Running well at 13:15 in 37C. Ping is a bit dodgy, but not affecting work.

Did a bit of re-positioning of my Huawei in the loft. Download still considerably less than usual but upload has shot up to 55mbit. Still same cells and bands locked on the modem so yeah .. odd. Also took some temp readings up there and the Huawei was at 57C. This is outside of it's operating temperature :(

Yeah, it's hot mate..
BTW I'm building an outdoors enclosure for my VN007+ and it'll have 2 fans (n+1 ;)). Don't think these past days are a one-off...
