5G can improve society more than AI, says British public

A article that states the benefits of 5G specifically the 5G network that Vodafone and Three once merged will create.

Please note that the report was commissioned by Vodafone and produced by WPI Economics.

Some interesting facts are in the article for example :

By using higher grade IOT technology and 5G enabled checkups, the NHS is reported to be able to save a estimated £1 billion a year which could fund a estimated 15,400 nursing jobs.

5G sensors on the railways could save passengers a estimated 25 million hours in delays over 5 years.

Lastly, 5G powered smart city lights could save local councils a estimated £700 million over a 5 year period which also saves a estimated million tons of COE which is equal to replacing 250,000 cars with electric versions.

More in the article itself.

I've read the press release and played with their infographic. It's one of those articles that take a buzz word and just run with it. 5G, AI, machine learning, blockchain... makes my eyes roll.

5G will allow for lower latency and higher speeds. That's it. Latency and speeds are still better on fixed connections, Wi-Fi is still a thing, hospitals are usually in well developed areas, etc. Everything from sensors, smart light posts, info on bus stops, etc, to medical devices are already out there. You don't need 5G or even a merger between Vodafone and Three for this.

They also mix the opinion of the "UK public" in there. Well, the public doesn't really know how 4G or 5G works and that's how you got people to think that 5G was going to be revolutionary, just to then find out that the 5G on their phone struggles to open their favourite social media app because it's n28 from a cell tower far away.

And it's funny to see Vodafone saying all that when the "5G Ultra" network they're launching only uses band n8 (900Mhz) for now. I'm sure they'll do lots of assisted surgeries with that, lol.
