5G router and possible speeds with Three?

Hi all

Currently I have a Plusnet FTTC connection (Tier2) which only gives me about 45mbps due to the cable length from our premises to the cabinet. Openreach have been out and investigated and say its not a fault, its just the length of cable.

IMO 45mbps ain't great for a 21 century internet connection, especially since I moved from a Virgin connection which could go up to 500mbps. Yes, OK, I know lots of folks are struggling to get 20mbps!

So... Having used 4G with a router and external antenna very successfully in the past, I'm thinking about using a 5G router and maybe an external antenna, as Three say our area is good for 5G.

Any ideas which router would be good to use and what speeds I *might* see?

Regards

I am using Huawei CPE Win 5G (cat19 lte) external router (to avoid coax cable losses), powered over ethernet.

On 5G with EE my top speed registered on fast.com was 700 Mbps, but that was an exception.
During the day it averages 300+, while in the mornings I usually get 400-500.

The downside of the connection is high-ish latency, 25+ ms. It's great for general use, downloads, streaming, but might not be for gaming. Another issue is CGNAT which can affect some games.

25ms doesn't seem terrible to me, but I'm not a gamer. When I was an IT manager, we had people using Terminal Server / Citrix at their homes and so long as the latency was <100ms they didn't complain. Only really browsing, messaging, email, a bit of Zoom/Skype and lots of streaming here tbh.

300-500mpbs would be great, especially for £12/month :)

Well, that's the speed I am getting with EE, it's no guarantee you'll get the same with Three.

I wouldn't sign up to contracts until I've tested the heck out of it, this forum is full of Three horror stories, but some do report very high speeds on 5G so could go either way. Try with payg or smarty sims.

Regardless of provider, test, test test before committing. :)

However.. if your only needs are "browsing, messaging, email, a bit of Zoom/Skype and lots of streaming" the 45mbps FTTC should be sufficient!

I was forced on to mobile broadband by a faulty Openreach line they couldnt fix, otherwise I would've never migrated I guess; not that I regret it, EE's been brilliant.

Also getting around about 300 mbits here on three 5G but i'm using my phone and tethering because the 5G CPEs are IMHO too expensive at the moment (and few antenna options, most can't even take an external antenna)
