5G router recommendation for motorhome

Hi Guys,

I currently have Teltonika RUT950 + TRANS-DATA 5G DZ7 aerial mounted on TV aerial pole (https://atcsupplies.ie/product.php?id=004215). I'd like to change my router for something that will support 5G and will allow me to change frequencies etc.
I was thinking about HUAWEI 5G CPE Pro 2/Unicom VN007+ or something similar.
Any other ideas?

Any other ideas? The Huawei CPE Pro 2 has no external antenna sockets wacko_jacko, so you can maybe score that router off your list if you want to use an external antenna.
The Zyxel NR5103E does have external sockets though and is quite popular, it's 5G and also features band locking.

You can read about it in the rather large thread above.

It's widely available on ebay and also in CEX for pretty reasonable prices. :)

It might be worth considering whether a TRB500 could be a drop-in replacement.

TRB500 would make sense, but don't want to pay £400+ at the moment. Same with GL-X3000 - but thanks for letting me know about the model. That's another OpenWRT router I'd love to have, but can't afford

BTW I don't mind modifying the router to get external aerials or changing a firmware to get extra features.

Is Zyxel any better than the two I posted?

If you want to use external antennae with the NR5103E, you need either a 4x4 MIMO or 2 2x2 MIMO -- it has 4 antenna ports and they all need to be connected.

Not true at all.

You can technically unused ports disconnected OR connect them with the tiny TS-9 antennas if you're worried about it.

The only ports on the NR5103E that need to be connected is the top, and third port down. I'm quite certain these are ports used for both transmitting and receiving, the other 2 for receiving only. For NSA and 4G, the top port is 100% needed for operation. Third is diversity and MIMO and I think SA 5G TX

Leaving receiving only ports open is fine but might affect noise a little so best practise is to connect something like one of the small TS-9 antennas.

The worry with leaving ports open is that they might burn out - this is true for ports that can transmit as if left open, any transmitions send have nowhere to radiate and so nowhere for the power to disspiate causing it to be reflected back to the modem potentially causing damage.

a single 2x2 MIMO antenna set up will be more than adequate on the top and third port down, the other 2 can be left with the TS-9 antennas.

Thanks for the recommendation guys. I will be looking for Zyxel. Did anyone unlock it in the past? I can see that most of them are from Three .

The three branded Zyxel NR5103E is unlocked wacko_jacko, you can use it on all 4 networks.
These are all 3 branded. :)

It happened to my three branded mc801a to me its once bitten do EE ones get blacklisted at all?
I don't know anyone here who has one apart from myself.
I've never heard of any reports of blacklisted routers at all, apart from your own ZTE MC801A.

Ive come across 2 lots of Three Branded MC801s that were owned by friends in the past and became Door Bricks overnight, whether they were Blacklisted due to previous Owners Contract payment issues or not being returned to Three we will never know as Three refused to discuss the issue other than to the original Account Holder.

I suppose technically you may be better off with the EE Branded NR5103's as EE do not require the Router to be returned at the end of Contract also EE allow the Sale of Contract Devices after 6 Months within the Contract Term (assuming of course the Contract period is payed off, satisfied or the Ongoing Payments are continued).

As @The Wee Bear states, well never really know until its happens, but bare in mind you have no where to run if it happens, as these Devices were never sold or available as Unbranded Network and or Firmware Free in our Region.

I have ordered from them before I got the three 4g+ hub and the zte mf286d from them both working fine this time I won't have to send to router mods as all they do is convert ts9 to sma I have the adaptors for that already might yet get the Poynting 5G-XPOL-1-V2-41 up to test at some point problem I seem to have is I am between 4 or 5 masts and some of them are very far from me yet the router locks on to them Little eccleston to Lancaster is quite a trip.

I want to refresh on the subject. I killed my Zyxel and I need another one. Is there anything better on the market for a similar price mark these days?
