5G router roundup

What I struggle to understand is why these routers are generally so restricted to bands, its just a frequency, whats the problem just using 1 specific band to handshake a cell tower and then it tells the router which frequencies to connect too and it does? Why is it so difficult to produce a router which can connect to any given frequency/band?

There's got to be more than that to it, more than just firmware changes. These chipsets are very specialised out of the factory to keep power consumption and thermals low, plus some bands are tdd, some fdd, it's got to require some hw changes.
Don't forget the antenna as well, it's not trivial to make a good antenna for many bands, it's a science in itself. As you've noticed many routers have internal-only antennas which can't be changed.

After much reading.. I've narrowed my 5G router down to a couple of choices. It's really hard to find one that actually covers the UKs 5G bands and also get as many 4G bands in there as I can.

If anyone is interested, this is what I've narrowed them down to ,perhaps it will help someone make their decision. I based this from spec sheets, manuals, websites that sell them so I take no responsibility for the accuracy but i did my best.

I still can't decide, but it's going to be one of the above.
Antenna? means can it accept an external one. N/A if it's an external router.

How is the CPE pro2 an outdoor router?

It'll be fine in some cling film, it's pouring here, I can try if you like. 🤔

There's more to outdoorsy than rainproofness.
For example the CPE Win has some protection against electrical discharges (storms etc) as well as will heat up before starting in very cold weather, not to mention PoE - though you could sort this with adapters. There are probably other differences, too.

Whatever next, someone is offering a 4x4 mimo modification for the CPE Pro 2 now I see.

Just send them your router and £60 and hope you get it back working. 🤞🏻

I think I'd be scared to send it off to be honest, it's not as if it didn't cost much.

Just thought I'd share a geeky CPE Pro 2 mod with you folks. 😄

That's so cool! @devs might be interested as he is working on modding his. Care to share a link?
Wonder if the mod covers 5G, too.

Hi Lucian, I didn't want to post a direct link for fear of breaking any spam rules, but if you do a cpe pro 2 search on ebay, you'll find it no poblem.

Yes I posted it knowing devs was trying to do the same thing.

Hope he may find it of interest.:giggle:

Yeah, found him. Interesting service, definitely a niche to be filled.

Thats really helpful Dabigm, its such a shame there isn't a standard for 4g router manufacturers to follow which specifies a minimum number of channels. Currently the industries "throw a dart" and see where it lands approach doesn't help customers who want to maximize their download speeds when purchasing 4g/5g routers. Its not like there are a multitude of other variables that can impact this anyway, this haphazard approach to manufacture just complicates the matter further still.

I mean, the OPPO looks awesome, but its 4g band availability just sucks.

Not really, you can buy for example Poynting 5G-XPOL-1 (5G-XPOL-1-V2-41) in 4x4 MIMO configuration, 4 cables.

Or get 2x of the "regular" 2x2 ones, space them 1m apart, sorted... Might even give you better performance than the 4x4 one, depending on location/situation :)

What is not clear to me is whether the ports are for 4G or 5G or both, unsure how the router looks like internally, antenna-wise. If it has 4x 4G antennas and 4x 5G ones..

PS: I think it's same guy from this reddit thread

Are those long green boards down the sides two of the 4 antenna then? I presume there's another 2 on the other side.

Looks like one at the top is for wifi.

Hey guys, someone contacted me from this forum via ebay regarding my mod service and he pointed me to this discussion where your all discussing my modification,

yes that's also me on redit

Do you like what I've done with the CPE? 😂

Hey buddy and nice mod, I'm about to do similar on a H112-370 and would like to hoot it up to a Poynting 4G-XPOL-A0002. I live in a 4G area and doubt 5G will hit anytime soon. Do you think it will work okay?

Cheers :)

Yeah will work wonderful, I also use poynting antennas though I use x2 xpol-2-5g in 4x4 mimo configuration.
