64k isdn pings unstable (isdn not for gamers)

I have had isdn for 1 year now from bt home highway I use a asus pci isdn card and im online mainly for gameing like quake 3 and counter strike

basically 64k connection to any isp 24/7 or a local rate isp including dedicated games isp's like jolt and barrysworld the pings suck there usally very unstable!!!

I have experianced pings from as low as 30 one minute to as high as 240 the next while playing on full servers with 15 to 20 people

i would say that the average ping over lets say
a 20 min game would be 130 on a 64k connection. So a 64k isdn connection for gamers is pointless and unstable

On the otherhand a 128k connection seems alot better for online gameing (maybe this is due to the increase in bandwith?) the pings in games are alot more stable from 30 to 130 on a full server with 20 odd people, I would say my average ping over a 20 min game was about 80.

Whats my point? isdn sucks for games and 128k connections are too expensive :( I truly regret getting isdn i would of been better off on a 56k modem

My last hope anyone know of a cheap 128k isdn isp either 24/7 or offpeak and weekends service charged monthly not a 1p a min isp or Vispa!

128K: Pipex, Demon. (can't think of others)

P.S I have 64k ISDN and with 4thenet isp. When i play Multiplayer online i get Stable pings most of the time, when 20 people or less are in it. ( i get around 40-80 ping) However when there are over 30 people, my ping only stays stable when there isn't a big 'battle' going on in front of me. this i am taking from RTCW. On Q3 my pings are stable all the time.

Also i here of 128k packages coming out in the near future so keep ur eyes open,

Also if ISDN is the only option u have got then i can't see how it is a waste of mony/time. For me 64k is 5 times better than 56k anolague....

I been on ISDN for a year now, and I don't have a problem like you stated about the ping stablity. I play Q3 and UT mainly. Usually it's either the ISP you are on or your hardware configuration. I'm happy with ISDN, just that it's too expensive at the moment, wish I could get broadband in my area :(

Hi There,

i too have had no problems with HH 64kbps, i play counter-strike most days and nights with a stable 40 - 70 ping somtimes goes higher but very rare, i think u may have somthing not configured properly or somthing

i have vispa 24/7 and asuscom isdn 128k link at 64kbps with no probs :>

Well, I've had ISDN for a year and a half, and throughout that time I've seen ping/lag/latency performance deteriorate. This is ultimately to do with the ISPs I've been with tho. Freeserve Unlimited was a superb pinger, but when they went Friaco things went really pants. I then moved to Free24-7 (also Friaco) and Vispa hometime+ (128k offpeak)and aside from the very rare occasion, my pings are excellent. Just this last weekend I had two cronies round the house with their PC's for some Counterstrike, and we were online sharing my 128k connection and we were all pinging <70ms consistently.

At a time when you look at the other players on a game server and the amount of 130+ pings are disappearing it seems to me that if you are a serious gamer, and if you cant get ADSL or cable, then ISDN is your only choice. What the point of going onto a server of LPB's all pinging <60ms with your 56k modem pinging upwards of 150-200ms?

I've had isdn for about 4 years now (roughly), and have never had a problem with my ping playing HLife TFC, Counterstrike, VSlayer.

are the rate settings & stuff in your config.cfg correct? Have a look at <a href="http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/halflife/3.shtml" target="_blank">http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/halflife/3.shtml</a> & google around a bit for similar stuff.

I've used:
BTInternet (bit sucky, but thats bt for you :)
ezesurf (omg, was sweet while it lasted)
madasafish (excellent)
surfanytime (again a bit sucky)
intensive (excellent so far).

I used to have vbad problems with cstrike, but it turned out my gfx card was causing the problem, not my connection.

As far as "isdn not for gamers", imo it is a *vast* improvement over modem connection.

If you are into serious gaming ADSL is the last thing to go for. Your pings will be all over the shop. ADSL & Gaming do not go together.
Probably has not been to bad with ADSL upto now as the BT ADSL Network had so much spare capacity. It has now changed and the Gamers are not a happy lot.

Intensive do do 128k 24/7 unmetered:
<a href="http://secure.intensive.net/freedial/" target="_blank">http://secure.intensive.net/freedial/</a>
(thats where you sign up/ view available offers)

I am on
"Special Offer - Dual Channel 18 months Any Time (1 hour max per session)"
Its £117.50 1off payment for 18mth (plus 24/7 BT surftime fee of £17.02 pmth.
(there are other options which are paid monthly btw, i was just feeling reckless :)

I find 2nd channel a bit reluctant to come up somethimes, but if you got autodialer thingy that keeps retrying its no problem.

Ping is reasonably nice (Game is totally smooth anyway, no fractional freezez/ jumps) (I only play online at enforeced 64k tho, dont want 2nd line getting in way), 1hr drop is a slight pain, but if you pay more you can get up to 4 hour drop (or just recon after 1st map)...

I been with em about a week & a half, so far very impressed.

Word of warning: your intensive account will be activated immediately, and you can dial it (and be charged for dialage) immediately. It can take BT up to 48 hours to bring activate surftime, so keep usage down until you can confirm you're not being charged per minute (ie, by checking "cost of calls since last night" on bt website every night & seeing it not increase).

Also it says "bonding not guarenteed due to BT"; once my line bonds (usually several retries) i've had no probs, but maybe thats just me, and maybe the situation could worsen, who knows? I wouldnt reccomend signing up for a year (even tho im impressed with em ATM) unless you're feeling lucky :)

Oh, also also, i got no information about how many hours per day they'd consider "abuse" - i pulled a few hundred MB in 1st week or so to trial em out but I'm not really a heavy user...

NB, if you wanna further talk about intensive, prolly better go here:
<a href="http://www.ispreview.co.uk/cgi-bin/ubb2/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=154&t=000188" target="_blank">http://www.ispreview.co.uk/cgi-bin/ubb2/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=154&t=000188</a>
or in intensive forums

ADSL will deteriate as more users join the service. At 50:1 contention your performance will be worse than 56k dial-up. Make the most of ADSL while you can... and in the meantime, read these two articles <a href="http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-818011.html" target="_blank">http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-818011.html</a> <a href="http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1106-814343.html" target="_blank">http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1106-814343.html</a>
